okay, last post and I'll let this die. I'm an ***... When all else fails read the manual and learn how the DC and CM airbag systems work. They work on weight and sense a "small" object like a child and automatically turns on the "airbag off" light. When a large object, like my mother-in-law is sensed it turns on the "airbag on" light. I took the spring out and tested the system while my 3 year old was in the seat.
Sorry for the false alarm... Your help was appreciated. I took the spring back out and all is good!!!
Wish mine was the same. Took the springs out and even with my 215lbs body sitting in the passenger seat and the seat belt on, the Air Bag Off light still shows. Having a bitch of a time getting that danged spring back in too!!
Mine did that too at first. I put my key in the ignition and turned it to ACC so the passenger airbag light would come on. Removed the passenger buckle circuit board and operated it by hand. Sat in the seat and got it to where the light showed the passenger airbag was on. Then I carefully put it back in the buckle (still seated in the seat) so it lined up straight. Now I have no problem. The passenger airbag light will come on about 10-20 seconds after you sit in the seat and turn off with the same delay. My springs stayed out.
I'll give that a go but at the moment, I'm not feeling to confident in that just moving the little switch around a little bit can cause the light to turn on and off. Makes me wonder what would happen in an accident. Would it move just enough to disable the airbag prior to deployment?
Eeeek... after reading this thread, I wouldn't touch this mod with a 10 foot pole if it has anything to do with the airbag system. That's playing with fire and it becomes real and legitimate safety issue. How can anyone other than the engineer that designed the system be 100% certain the airbags are not affected?
If in an serious accident and the airbag does not deploy, investigators can easily see the springs are gone. Things could get complicated.
Just playing the advocate. Okay, now you can throw something at me.
It confuses the hell out of me, and pisses me off to no end that this could somehow affect airbags. I never would have done the passenger side if that was the possible outcome. Damn dealers should have turned it off for me!!!
I just got back from a graveyard shift. Later today I'm going to investigate this more; See if I can duplicate the same in mine.
2 minutes (both front seats), no battery disconnect, no more CHIME-CHIME-CHIME!!!!!!! Also did my wife's 07 Camry. This post, no doudt, gets my vote for the most valuable in a long while! Thanks to all!
I put the spring back in...now the light is constantly illumitated "airbag off". Even with a 220 lb person in the seat. Now I'm off to the dealer as the off light is a little disturbing for me personally. Wierd how some folks have no issues but others are...bummer. I HATE the chimes!!!

Did you drive around with this person in the seat?

Yes. He was in the seat for the drive into work. Before I picked him up, the "off" light was on as well. If I recall, it should be off when nothing is in the seat. I'm fearful I have broken something now...

A seatbelt saved my life and i have the scar to prove it. That being typed.....Why would anyone need a buzzer / beeper to tell them to put one on? Darwin theory sounds pretty good in this case. Down with the chime! Up with the smart folks.
Actually tonight I went to pick up my daughter after Volleyball practice. I pulled right in front of the school and she hopped in. My attention immediately went to the mirror so I could pull out. We got on the road and the chiming came on. I looked at her and reminded her to put the seatbelt on.
This is why I will never disable an obviously important feature.
This procedure works perfectly - BUT - you must reinsert the switch correctly. It took me 4 or 5 attempts to reinsert it straight and get the nice/loud click to indicate it's back into position correctly! Thanks again for the posting!

I played around with this a little more today as I also discovered the passenger airbag sensor not working correctly after I looked closer.
Despite the OP's assertion that this might have to do with the slide itself, I think it's something else. I actually did some experimenting in the seat with the sensor out of the seatbelt housing and the airbag on/off indicator seemed completely independent of the position of the slide.
My best guess is that if it's not inserted back into the belt correctly it fails to make some sort of connection or otherwise interferes with the operation of the airbag sensor.
Whatever it was, after I was done messing with it I put the sensor back in very carefully and now the airbag on/off is working as expected once again.
Strange. And I do admit it makes me a little more weary about this modification than I was at the beginning. It's a shame Toyota is making its owners go to these lengths to turn off its intrusive nanny features.
