Did you know the U.S. Government places restrictions and makes certain things mandatory in motor vehicles. i.e. third brake light. I would make sure Toyota is not following a mandate before blaming them. Furthermore, I think you guys who find it necessary to manipulate these safety items are asking for it in the long run.

I'm sure there are probably some mandates but I'm also sure the gubment doesn't dictate that it has to be so damned loud, long and annoying. A nice simple singular chime would do.
Yea if it was a ding ding stop I would of left it alone...

if it was a government mandate... then Toyota wouldnt make it so you could turn off the passenger side chime via computer... if the dealer(s) would pull their heads out of their rectums. (my local dealers.. not all.)

I'm fairly darned sure there is no government mandate that my vehicle must remind me with incessant red flashing lights and non-stop beeping that my seatbelt isn't fastened while I drive on my private dirt road to go get the mail. If there were then all vehicles would do this. Every other one I've been in will give up after a beep or two (and more importantly has a well-documented procedure on how to disable the chime entirely).
This is a "oh god please don't sue me" feature. Welcome to America - land of the lowest common denominator.
According to TITLE 49, UNITED STATES CODE CHAPTER 301 MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY, the government mandate for the seatbelt buzzer is 8 seconds long after the ignition is switched to the "on" position. So Toyota and some of the other manufacturers as well have gone above and beyond the call of duty for litigious reasons as has been stated.
As I read it, the code is unclear as to whether the buzzer applies to the passenger seat as well as the driver seat.
I'm confused... The alarm can be turned off electronically without altering or removing anything so why would people do it?? I turned it off in my 07 FJ via the odometer reset button method without changing or removing anything... It took all of 2 minutes and I'd guess there is a same proceedure for everything on the "setable" list shown earlier in this post... I guess I'll mess with my 07 Tundra and see if I can't fingure it out...

I have bench seats and I accomplished this modification sucessfully. I put a small amount of transparent "Scotch" tape wrapped around the center protruding prong to keep the slider from coming up. I first considered a small piece of heat shrink tubing around the top of the center prong but thought it might add too much thickness to this part causing interference with the buckle assembly. So one thin wrap with Scotch tape was good for me.
The first time I did the passenger side I too had the passenger airbag "off" indicator. Took a test drive to check different configurations. I took apart the passenger sensor again this time time did like Toxarch where I turned the key on with the sensor out and slid it up and down to see what the response was. I ended up Scotch taping the sensor about 2/3 of the way down, just after the belt light goes off. I re-assembled the sensor into the latch assembly and now all acts normally. If somebody of weight is in the passenger side the airbag "on" light is illuminated. If they get out of the seat the "on" light goes off and the "off" light goes on after about 20 seconds. If they get back in the "on" light comes back on. Seemingly normal response with no chimes.
I discovered the passenger side sensor a bit more persnickety to install with a positive "snap" compared to the driver's side. It just takes a bit of patience.
I will keep an eye on the airbag light over time to make sure it always comes on with a passenger-side occupant.
I looks like the center buckle might have a sensor too (bench seat). I won't worry about it because it is a rare occasion I have somebody in the center and in any case it will be a standard belt-wearing situation.
Thanks to you fellows who figured this out. It's a nerve saver for farmers who find themselves jumping in and out of their moving pickup (neutral-drive-neutral) while adjusting equipment.

Does anyone know how to disable the passenger seat belt alarm? Or disable the way the truck figures out there is weight in the seat? I am thoroughly annoyed every time I put my backpack in the passenger seat the alarm goes off and I have to keep the darn seat belt buckled. Anyone? Is there a master off that maybe I am not finding?
This is on my 2007 Tundra
Thanks

It did on my FJ but I still have not tried it on the Tundra... Going to try anyway because there has to be a way to set all the other variables, this one should be no exception... It was the same with my Hummer H3 with just a few subtle differences...
Well. The passenger air bag light went to the "off" position after a couple of days and has stayed there. Glad I kept the little springs in a sealed envelope so I can re-install the passenger side.
I will try to see if my Toyota dealer can do the programmed override for the passenger side but I fear my request will fall upon deaf, ignorant ears.

I've put mine back in too. Just not worth knowing if the Air Bag Off light will come on at the wrong moment. For now, I'll just live with the dinging.
taking the spring out at first did not show any problems with the passenger side airbags function, now after having it out for a while, nothing will turn the airbag on. Springs are back in for good.
