Here is a pictorial to show you how to remove the door panels.
This is the back door for the CrewMax but the front doors are the same.
Remove the 2 screws behind the door latch cover and the grab handle.
Push the plastic pin in with a small screwdriver. The pin is towards the front on the front doors.
After these 3 fasteners have been removed, start at the bottom and pull the panel away from the door. When it is free pull up to get over the window ledge.
Disconnect the door lock and door open cables (they snap out)
Disconnect the power window harness
Disconnect the puddle lamp harness
You can remove the door

So how does system sound w/o a subwoofer? Is door speaker upgrade enough of an improvement? Or is subwoofer next move? Did you keep standard (non-JBL) head unit?

Yessir! an amp and sub will be the next step. I haven't decided on the head though. I'd like to get a double DIN nav system but that depends on if I can save enough moolah, there are so many things I want to get. I'm gonna use the factory head unit for now. I have a pair of JL 10W1s from my old car and a pair of 8W1s from my old truck. I'll see which ones will work best for the space available. I also haven't decided on the amp, I prefer discrete channels for the speakers so it will probably be a milti channel amp like a 5 or 6 channel.
It sounds OK, nothing to brag about. It is much better than the stock system though. The internal amp on the factory head doesn't have much power, it peters out pretty quickly.

Polk db690 in front and Polk db650 in the back. Crutchfield was closing them out so both pairs were under $150. Don't know if they have anymore, I just got their new catalog and it shows the db691 and db651 which are the newer model.
I'm thinking for the average person the 6X9's powered by an external amp is probably sufficient bass reproduction.
Didn't someone on here get a wiring diagram that allowed them to split into a signal for an external amp to power the mids and highs? If so please post details on the wires (color, location etc.)
i just put in the db691s and the tweets in the center are pushing on the door panel. i did not use the spacer provide with the speakers.
if you get 6x9s make sure the tweet is flush w/ the speaker
