I have tested it several times and confirmed that you do in fact lose some functionality, which is to be expected since they don't upgrade the firmware just for fun. For me this was a deal killer since the AUX jack on the dash never worked with the downgraded firmware - you could plug something in but the AUX switch never enabled the device to play through. I reverted back to 6.1 and the AUX worked fine again. Also, you had to manually enable the bypass function every time you started your vehicle, which to me was as much or more of a pain than the occasional function block while in motion.
I assume you used the 5.1 software on a Tundra? I have an '07 Camry Hybrid, and the aux input works just fine on it with my 5.1 software / 6.1 data disk.
What other screens are missing. I have not noticed any missing functionalities in my camry.
The DVD firmware mod does work once you get the DVD to burn properly. It is not new and has been documented on numerous forums over the past two years (here and here just to name a few).

I had started to compile a list of the other functions and screens that were missing or limited after the downgrade but then I scrapped those notes since it was quickly apparent that I did not want to use the old firmware under any circumstance. I reverted back to 6.1 and now I use my wiring mod to bypass the motion lockout for 30-40 seconds with just one flip of the switch whenever I need it. Soon I will have the pulse generator circuit completed and then it will be a permanent mod and no need to even flip the switch. My advice would be to go ahead and wire a toggle switch into your speed sensor line - cheap, easy, and ultimately just as effective without having to downgrade your firmware and lose functionality.
Hey wilee, I just tried my ipod on the dash aux and it worked fine. made sure that i did the override first. Could you post up some of the other functions you lost so I can test those too. My brother in law was able to look up a Harbor Freight tools we wanted to go to, and I called them with the bluetooth function last night while going down the highway. I'm pretty happy so far.
My iPod seems to work fine through the AUX also, however, the user interface might be a little different, possibly. I'm not crazy about using teh older version of the software so I'm leaning towards going back to the stock nav software at this point, however, I just haven't bothered to put the old DVD in and pull the fuse yet.
It's nice to have the option, though, of using the modified version just in case I get involved in a scavenger hunt or a cross-country rally race some day.

We had a burner at work.
Followed the instructions in the 1st post (THANKS!) except I used build and write in "imgburn". Worked perfect 1st time, no coasters.
I can't tell that I've lost anything, can someone please enlighten me? Everything seems to be working exactly as before, right down to the Aux port, Ipod plays just like before.
One other thing I did figure out on the way home, and some of you may know this but have just not said it....
You can access and override while in motion. So, if you forget to override before you get on the freeway, you can still override the system without stopping.
This mod is exactly what I needed...

Wilee, I in no way intended for people to think that Im the originator of this mod, I only wanted to document that I proved to people on this forum, that it worked for our Trucks as well. I even attached the link to one of the original sites I got most of my data from. Problem with most of these forums was I had to sort though alot of posts till I found what worked most reliably. I am a great fan of your posts btw, and am wondering what features do you think were lost between firmware versions?
I didnt experience any issues with my AUX jack when I did the mod? Please
let me know what issues you had. I use my IPOD daily on it without any problem. Maybe this was an issue on other vehicles??

I posted the links to the other forums so that interested parties could visit those threads for more detail, especially those that are having trouble burning the DVD. The other threads have a lot more detail about burning DVDs and it seemed like a waste of effort for TS visitors to re-discover and re-post all of that info here.
I agree that it is a hassle to read through all of those other threads, however I have also learned most of what I know by investing many hours to google each subject and read many similar long threads. If people are having trouble then I suggest that they use the search function on this forum as well as google and then do the reading. This will save us all time in the end.
If you want to compare the functionality between the two versions then you can replace your 6.1 DVD, pull the fuse for 5 minutes, restart, and take pictures or notes of each 6.1 screen and function. Then go back to 5.1 and do the same and compare your notes. I had started to do this but decided to abandon it when I found at least 4 differences rather quickly, and because I didn't like having to stand on my left foot and do a rain dance to enable the bypass every time I started the vehicle. I also figured a new NAV firmware version would come out eventually with even more functions and I wouldn't want to stay with 5.1 just for the lame software bypass.
I honestly don't recall all the differences from 5.1 to 6.1 but I think several were related to the ASL sound quality and maintenance functions. Unfortunately I threw those notes out and I don't plan to invest hours documenting the versions since I don't plan to use the 5.1 anyway.
Based on a post at another forum, Toyota has indeed released the 7.1 firmware which apparently contains some improvements including the removal of the very annoying "I agree" prompt. So I am upgrading to 7.1 as fast as I can test drive a vehicle that has it inside, and I will still be able to use my existing toggle switch to bypass any blocks that are controlled by the speed sensor. I just found some good info the other night so I am almost ready to build my speed pulse generator circuit. Details to follow when I get it done.
Note: I receive many messages about the NAV Speed Pulse Generator so I continue to build them for people on request. If you want one then just PM me via this forum and include your email address.
There are some things that are preserved in memory such as your home address and your destination history. I think that's what the memory points thing is for. However, the nav doesn't remember what your screen preferences are or speed configurations or the way you want the display to work. It's kind of ridiculous that it would remember that you wanted to go to the IHOP 4 weeks ago but it will not remember that you prefer QWERTY keyboard layout and what you like the screen to show.
Also, the memory of the power seats is gone.
Factory navi got to love them the Tundra system is a tab bit better vs the lame Navi found on the Avalon jeez you think Toyota would have designed a nicer system
I would love to Kill the designer on there avalon system there outdated Pos with No refinement in this class it's second 3 world rate technology based on features.

You are not suggesting that you are going to "steal" a copy of 7.1 are you?
You do know you can buy a legitimate copy of 7.1 at your dealer.

I did not mention stealing and I do not appreciate the accusation.
I plan to borrow a 7.1 DVD from a demo car, with dealer permission, so I can test it in my vehicle to make sure it works with my NAV before I shell out the unreasonably large sum that the dealer wants for it.

You specifically stated you are going to upgrade, not that you might upgrade if you like it. You inferred stealing, whether you like it or not.
Also, you are stealing if you just load the operating software from the demo car onto your car's system. Remember, our navs don't load the software every time, but just when they first see a new version or when they loose power and the software dumps from the memory. So by just putting the 7.1 into your nav, you will have the new fimrware, but no new maps when running the 6.1 disk.

I do plan to upgrade but only if the new version works on my vehicle and contains enough improvement to justify the time and cost. This is obvious so there was no need to elaborate.

Testing the new DVD at the dealership with the dealer's permission is not theft. It is true that you need to remove power to the NAV to clear the firmware, and it might be possible to use the new firmware with the old maps.

I finally finished the speed pulse generator and it works like a dream! Less than $15 total cost and no need to downgrade firmware. I made a new thread for others since this thread is now buried. Check it out for photos and details:
