Default MODS+DYNO Results

Well I had a little extra time on my hands this month so I thought it would be a good time to do some dyno runs. I'm not claiming to be an expert at engine tuning nor on the products tested so take this material for what it's worth. I have a crewmax 4x with the 5.7L engine with almost 9k miles running Mobile 1 oil. My truck has bigger tires so for you who think the numbers are lower than expected take that into consideration. I had asked the operator of the dyno if the tires made a differance and he didn't think it would make much. I had a number of pulls performed on my truck with different configurations. Another thing to keep in mind is our elevation here is just over 1000 ft above sea level.

1) Stock truck
2) K&N cold air intake with the stock exhaust
3)K&N cold air intake with a JBA dual exhaust
4)K&N cold air intake with a JBA dual exhaust and opening a vent between the Mass Air Sensor and the Throttle Body.(to try and lean out the truck)

My personal experience is that the K&N made a noticable differance in drivability and performance. I think this mod was worth the money.
The exhaust would have worked better if their was a way to lean out these trucks (programmer, adjustable mass air sensor, etc) as for drivability with the exhaust I feel that fuel consumption has increased without running the truck any different.

On one last note GO TRIBE......

Nice to see some actual back to back runs. Kinda puts a little hiccup in the old, CAI are useless, posts. (makes me feel better about buying mine and though mine is ona Tacoma I am thinking it is still worth more than just the cool sound...lol)

Those numbers are at the wheels remember, so it makes them look even better. Thanks for proving what I knew all along, but many others doubted. I did nearly this exact same thing with my V8 4Runner but in addition, I tuned the air-fuel ratios as well. I got the same results as you. Larger gains with the intake, but a little more power with exhaust. I agree, they do need tuned as well -- 11:1 at WOT is pretty rich...

Great job, Thanks for sharing this with us.

One last thing. Go Rockies!!

Nice post,

When you say " I feel the fuel comsumption has increased", do you mean the vehcile is burning more fuel, or getting better MPG??

The 11:1 ratio is probably a little lower in reality. Instead of removing an O2 sensor and using a wide band sensor to get a true reading we used a sniffer attached to the dyno so we would not get a check engine light on the truck. The dyno operater felt the actual reading should be near the 10's.

I have noticed about 2 MGP less in fuel economy department and that's not using the display on the dash, but using a calculator plus adding in for the tires. My mileage after tires and pre engine mods was around 17.1 now it's around high 14"s to low 15"s.

g.o.m.bowtie,
Do you have any ECT data from the runs? A previously posted dyno showed a correlation between ect and F/A ratio.

The only logical explanation for a catback exhuast causing a decrease in fuel economy is that your putting your foot in it more because you like the sound.

I absolutely cannot believe what the K&N appears to add in the midrange. It appears too good to be true.

+>50hp at 3500 rpms!!!!!!!!

I think it's because of the lack of back pressure, bigger pipes and cooler exhaust gasses at a lower RPM

Actually K&N's dyno runs seem to show the same type of curve and no I'm not putting my foot into it more for the sound, but like I said before Take it for what its worth. I just thought some people would like to see some real data.
