I have a 07 Tundra Salsa Red that I have had since the end of July. I am really carefull where I park and what I get too close to ( tree limbs bushes) I have several scratches where the paint is scratched to the primer. I am not really happy about it since if it is doing this now what is it going to look like in a year? I took it in for the 5,000 mile service and I asked the dealer about the paint. I was told that certain colors the red being one of them has more metal or metallic in it and it will scratch easier. I was offered a bottle of touch up paint. I hate having a 35,000 plus vehicle that is going to be covered in touch up paint? Has anyone else had this issue?
Already several threads on this. I have visable scratches as well and I have been anal about this thing. Guess we will have to learn to live with these things. I've been told to expect these growing pains from a 1st year model but I've never had problems with Toyota before.
I looked briefly for a thread as I thought I had read one before. It is very frustrating as I am super picky about scratches and door dings. My 01 looked almost perfect when I traded it.
I've owned several black vehicles over the years, and this one does seem to be more susceptible to scratching....paint seems a bit "soft". Only have a couple small ones so far, but it's only a month old.
It's not just Tundra's, all the newer vehicles out there suck in the paint department. I paint at a large dealer production bodyshop, and I see it everyday. Transparent, thin, and orange peel. Like metrictundra said stick with the lighter colors if your picky about scratches and marks in the paint.

I was amazed at all the scratches down to the primer that were in my Beige F 150 when I finally washed it to trade it in for the Tundra. Odd considering it was a 2WD that never went off road. I guess they came from just brushing up against it. Of course the scratches don't show through dirt.
I would like to comment on a lot of people on this site that are stressing over details that a typical work truck owner would find trivial, however not knowing them or thier situation I will reserve judgement.
I can however share my own experience and observations:
- I knew going in that the paint was thin and scratched easily, my Truck was on the Dealers lot only a couple of weeks and got 3-light brush against type scratches that ended up making it to the primer, however I knew why this was and did not even mention it as part of my negotiations.
- Due to the latest EPA regs the paint lines in the US are not able to employ solvent based thinners in thier process, thus the current process makes for a much higher "orange peel" appearance which only gets worse the more coats of paint are applied.
- I appreaciate that Toyata did not make it difficult (by appyling to many coats of inevidabley orange peeled paint) for my painter to apply a quality smooth laquer or enamel paint job that I would like to invest in the future.
- This is the first Truck that I have owned that has the mechanicals, driving pleasure and comfort to justify investing into a long term relationship.
- I look forward to building on this 1st Draft Design by Toyota (98% is superior to anything else available)
- In already know how to make the tailgate indestrucatable
Ultra thin paint on all these things. If you look at it funny it will leave a scratch down to the primer. Worst paint job on any new vehicle I have ever owned.
Between the bad paint, painted dash, cheap plastics, collapsing tailgates, spongy soft bed, etc...and not counting for the real problems people are having with these things...I am official selling mine. I've spent 3 weekends installing amps, speakers, nav, etc. and unless somebody wants to pay for it I will be taking it out. Only good news is that it comes out in 1/10 the time it went in.
I have owned Ford trucks in the past and never had the issues with them I've had with this Junkra. I admit I like the look and power...but I want a truck I can use and not have to worry about. I never worried about my Ford truck.
Whenever Toyota gets the kinks worked out I may be back. But then again I may not since I will be losing money on this POS.
PS you can check my prior posts if you think I'm trolling. I own this thing and I'm really just sick of worrying about it. I want a truck that will give me piece of mind and the new Tundra is not it.
I cannot speak for any color of Toyota other than Salsa Red. I had a 92 4X4 extended cab truck with salsa red paint also. The paint is the same as it is on our Tundra. The salsa red seems to be a brittle, thin paint. It chips and scratches very easily. We scratched ours by accidentally rubbing up against it with a bag of groceries. All trucks are not like this. I drive a new Ford Super Duty at work. The paint on it is much tougher than the Tundra. Just a fact. I live with the paint because I like the Toyota. If I hauled something heavy in my truck, like a wheeler or such, I would lose the Tundra. For what I use a truck for the Tundra is okay. Knowing what I know now, I doubt I would purchase another new Tundra. Toyota has to fix some things.

I was told that most manufacturers are having the same issue with the thin paint, due to EPA regs, how ever white paint is the only one that will stand to regular use, my desert sand is been in my hands for a few weeks and I have at least half dozen scratches, (as many as my ford did after 4 years) If this is the only concern that I have to face, then I can put up with it. Love my truck.

I agree with ya. I have an 07 silverado, black, and it has scratches, and I'm very careful with it. A lot of people on the GM truck sites are complaining about the crappy paint quality as well.
So is there any special paints jobs that a local shop could perform to eliminate some of these scrathes (i.e. clear coat again). My black '07 can look at a tree branch and get a scratch. I'm glad this forum is here. I've only had my truck for 13 days and I already have found 6 scratches that weren't there when I left the dealership. My truck has spent 5 of those 13 days in the garage. The other 8 were outside in my private driveway. I am with you guys, this paint job sucks, it looks great when it's clean but the durability is the worst I've seen!
Things could be worse, you could have those lovely paint jobs from GM and Chrysler from a few years back. You've seen them, the ones where the paint has just peeled off to the primer in large areas on the hoods and roofs.
