I figured for the $1000 I spent on the trailer it was worth the money, now I can throw whatever I want in it without concern for denting my bed or tailgate, cheap insurance I guess.
I put a friends Yamaha 660 ATV in the back of the truck yesterday. I backed up into a ditch and used a piece of ply wood (5 ply) and it was 4' x 3'. It was mainly there to ensure i didnt damage the corner of the tailgate when loading. If i had to move an ATV often i would invest in a trailer. Its much easier then having to use Ramps all the time and you dont have to worry about messing anything up on a brand new truck.

On the contrary, you could always buy a DC longbed, take your CM cab and put it on the DC chassis, then buy a standard 6.5 bed and install that on the chassis. Then you'd have a CrewMax w/ a 6.5 'ft bed (after you chopped a few inches of the rear of the chassis). However, I bet this would cost more then a few pennies. Can't wait for Toyota to do this!
You realize that would create a 6" gap between the bed and cab?
The length difference between the CrewMax cab and DoubleCab is about 12". The bed difference between a long bed and a short bed is 18".
Now if someone wanted to extend the short bed to a 7' footer that would work, but its not a simple swap.
How much weight is enought to be on the tailgate? I had the ATV in the back but there was no weight on the tailgate. Only weight on the tailgate was the bed extender.

If you latch down the bed extender that should keep the tailgate from floating.
If i ever have to do a long trip with an ATV in the back ill prob bungee a 5 gallon gas can down on my tailgate. It would be easy to bungie down with the bed extender.

I wish I had the room for a trailer. I have a house with a 2 car garage with my truck and a Honda Accord. I wish I got the 3 car garage than my problems would be solved.
You know its not really that expensive to rent a trailer from your local rental company. It was like $17 a day for me, but get expensive depending on how much you use it. I had to rent something and they offered the trailer for easier loading. I had thought about buying one until then. I don't have to store it, put a tag on it, keep up the tires, etc. If you used it often it might make more sense to buy one though.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm going to buy the Can Am 800 Outlander XT within the next week. I want that quad so bad I can taste the dirt in my teeth. I have bought a 4x8x1 inch piece of plywood. I cut it to the length of the bed with the tailgate down. I'm hoping that will keep the weight off the tailgate. In my minds eye, I would think that with the wood on there the tailgate could fall off and the ATV would still be held up by the piece of plywood. I will take lots of pics when I get the quad to show you what I have done. I just hope it works because this is the main reason why I got this truck. I hate to worry about this stupid tailgate but I do want to prevent any damage to it.

I haul my 03 rincon in my crewmax no problem. I have a Bedrug bed liner that covers the tail gate, I think that helps distributes the load,
Bedrugs are nice, but they do nothing for load carrying ability.
The most I've had on my tailgate is only 350#.

Rear Susp: ProComp ES3000 #326510 (2.25" taller than stock), 1.25" blocks plus PRG mini-pack (http://www.tundrasolutions.com/forum...and-new-truck/) gives 2.25" total lift, parking brake cable bracket spacers, wheel well height 43." Front diff and rear ds drop; trailer hitch electrical harness tucked up above bumper. After 20K miles swapped 305/65/18 BFG AT for 285/75/18 Toyo AT, still on stock 18x8x60 offset TRD wheels, about 1/8" clearance to sway bar. Like the extra height but miss the width. Next time either 305/70/, 295/70, or 35x12.50/18. Added 5th 285/75/18 Toyo AT as spare. Bed Bounce: Stiffer E-tires are worse than stock P-metric; biggest improvement from PRG mini-pack, slight improvement from shocks. Still a stiff ride but tolerable now. Best things about this truck: 5.7 and transmission, interior size and comfort, very quiet at high speed. Worst things about this truck: bed bounce, no VSC in 4wd, mileage sucks above 70.
Well I guess there is one good thing about the Guard Dog...If it doesn't work out for your Can Am you can still use it to hang your deer during huntin season!

I bought this product called "Louisiana Guard Dog". I use it to transport my Kawasaki Prairie 700 ATV in my '07 Crewmax. This allows me to secure my ATV and tow my boat. The price is well worth the convenience and security provided by this item.
How about something like this to keep the weight off of the tailgate. It can probably be modded to lift the back end of the ATV just a little off of the tailgate. Here is a video and there web site. Heck, I might just get one anyways.
