Good write up. I also like to change oils early on a new truck to purge the factory dirt and new-wear metal shavings out of the system. Did you jack up one side to get the axles to drain? What about the other side. I think I will do this soon. Thanks again.

Redline synthetic gear oil is available for the Tundra 5.7 differential that meets the OEM spec's.

Redline 75W80 LightWeight Gear Oil

A friction-modified gear oil designed for use where 75W80 GL-5 gear oil is recommended (may be too slippery for some syncros). Used in many motorcycle applications as an alternative to ShockProof types. It has excellent low-temperature flow which allows easier shifting when cold and good synchro compatibility. May be used to obtain maximum power transfer in racing differentials which do not see high temperatures.

Not sure I'd agree that it "meets the OEM specs." OEM is 75W85 GL-5, 75W80 is thinner than 75W85.

Curious - Did Dave at RedLine suggest this product for the Tundra?

The LightWeight oil seems to me to be a racing product thats thin to reduce viscous drag, with wear protection being a secondary consideration. But, if Dave at Red Line recommended it, I can't argue - he's a very smart cookie...

b

Daless2 also told me that the axle is a "wet axle" so I will add that to the write-up. Phoenix can we get this added to your DIY thread please?

Hi Ben,

A wet axle is where the axle tubes contain gear oil and the axle seals are at the ends of the axle near the wheel bearings.

A dry axle has seals between the differential and the axle tubes, preventing gear oil from going into the axle tubes.

The topic came up because of the technique of jacking up one side of the Tundra when changing the gear oil.

If you do this, you first should drain most of the oil out first, else you will trap gear oil in the down hill axle tube.

Hope this helps,

Frank

Excellent! I thought that might be the case, but I thought pretty much all axles were the wet type so I was unsure why they'd be called that.

Thanks much!

I did extensive searches on Google about six weeks ago before I ordered the Amsoil 75W-90 severe gear. I even wrote Amsoil, they suggested that the difference between 85 and 90 would be small - any fuel economy loss from the thicker oil would be offset hopefully by the synthetic Amsoil being a little more slippery. I can tell no difference in my truck between stock and the 75W-90...

Regarding my web searches, I only found a few hits on 75W-85 and all the hits were products outside the US. I think, and this is relying on my bad, bad memory, most of them were tranny lubes, not GL5 rated rear-end lubes!

I'd love it if someone else could spend some time on Google or another search engine to either confirm or correct my searches...

thanks much,
ben

I found this mobil one link. Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lubricant LS 75W-90 it states that it is gl-5 rated. although slightly heavier, mabey the fact that it is synthetic will offset that

Changed my diff oil today, very easy. When I cleaned off the drain plug I had very few metal shavings but I did have a thick build up on the drain plug almost like a lithium grease. Anyone else have this or know what it could be? Also, is changing the front diff oil the same or can anyone tell me how to do it?

Would it possibly be smart to just park on a steep uphill incline and then jacking up one side or the other would not be necessary and it would all come straight out the back evenly without possibly getting caught up in one of the axle tubes?? This thread is very helpful.
