TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Where is ECU located", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Exactly where the ECU located? I'm not so sure what it looks like. I have looked under the passenger side dash (behind glove box so to speak) and I see a compact flat box protrudung from the firewall. I'm thinking this is it. It seems to me to remove it, one would have to take it out from under the hood.....basically removing the bolts and sliding it back out thru the hood fire wall.
Can one of you brillaint peops out there conform for me that this is the ECU and if it is removed by pulling it out from the hood side? Thanks.
That's it. One word of warning..... The dealer replaced mine back in March, the tech screwed up the gasket, and I had a new loud noise that took the dealer 4 trips back and 4 loaner cars and one "super tech" from CA to finally figure it out...
Here's the information you requested, I believe that you are looking for the ECM and not the ECU. Attached a couple of pictures one is layout and other are components of the ECM.
Wasn't aware that Jet had anything for the 07 Tundra yet, but my 2cents is wait for a programmer that way you are able to go between programmed and stock programming.

I don't know if that is the Engine ECU? The one in the diagram looks like the main air bag ECU. Underneath the passenger seat there is another ECU. There all kinds of ECU's maybe if you can get a little more specific on which ECU you are looking for?

"ECU" Electronic Control Unit in the Tundra are "Sensors" which is part of the "CAN" Controller Area Network, they communicate and share information with each other. He is actually talking about the "ECM" Engine Control Module which is the "Brain".
The ECM is what I am looking for. JET refers to it as a ECU, but they did say it was behind the dash on the passenger side. So that is it.
Here is my thing....Toyota tells me if I do this it will void the warranty, obviously. JET says there is no way they can even tell in the forst place. That they cannot tell it has been reprogrammed or whatever they do. Common sense tells me to stay away if the warranty is in question. But if they can't tell, how can my warranty be voided?
Going to JET's site, they show the upgrade is not available online. However you can call them directly and it is available. It is $399 thru them, but you can get it thru Performance Products for $280. I don't like the idea that Performance Products does not have a disclaimer for knuckleheads like me, telling you that it can void the warranty. It might be a common sense thing, but I still think they should notate it in fine print or something.
So I'm struggling with the decision. When Harley Pop says to "wait for a programmer", what does this mean? In other words describe what a [programmer does? The same thing as JET is doing? And what is the typical cost of these programmers?

With a programmer you can constantly upgrade your ecm from your house. Say you add exhaust to your truck or a new CAI, then you would have to send your ECM back to jet to account for the new pieces, where as with a programmer you just get on the website that you got it from or call them and they will send you a new program, you download it on to the programmer plug it into the truck and you are done. Plus sending out the ECM sucks because for the time the truck wont run. You are also dealing with the postal system to deliver an expensive computer part without drop kicking it because it says fragile on the box.

I'd be willing to bet they CAN tell, like other brand vehicles. If you look in your owner's manual, it says there's even a "black box" like in an airplane that records some of your driving information.
