TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "drone stopper", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I reinstalled my flowmaster 70 series(524703) but this time i installed a resonator (AR-25) which is 2 1/2 ID, behind it, jackpot' no drone anywhere. this is a quality piece that does the job. 60mph is just sweet, 65mph gets sweeter, the faster you go the quieter it gets. the first time i installed the muffler i experience some low end loss, even with the stock tail pipe, now it's back. this is my opinion of what's going on; the free flowing muffler stole some back pressure, so to get it back, the 2.5'' resonator restores the lost velocity, remember that the flowmasters exit is 3''. hope my experiment helps you guys, now it's fun to listen to my exhaust again. this welder was not my main guy, as you can see, anyway here's pictures.

What did it do to your overall gas mileage? If you opened up the exhaust then closed it back down again, what the value of doing the install?

read the thread again, the resonator is right behind the muffler, it speeds up the exhaust gases for about 12", then opens up into the stock exhaust pipe, exhaust gases will slow down when pipe is enlarged. if my experiment helps you, fine, if not, then i assume you're content with what you have. one thing is for certain, if you have unwanted drone, you will have to solve it yourself, i call it thinking out of the box.

Don't worry about it dude, I must have tried a dozen different mufflers on my Chev before I got what I wanted.
I have no way of posting sound clips, but i will say this, if you're familar with the sound of flowmaster big block 50's and 70"s, the resonator takes much of the bite out. if you are running a aftermarket single exhaust and you don't like the drone, here is a viable solution. it only cost $65 shiped, small price for contentment.
most of you guys want sound clips when a exhaust system is installed, most guys with experience in this area will say, that sound clips don't mean dilly quat, you can go to flowmasters website an here bits, but you face the big dog only when you driving it, so my sound bite will not help you, driving my truck will sell you.
zoomers wants $150 extra to add a resonator to their exhaust

Thanks alot 07Firecrew! I know you've tried a lot of different configurations. Congratulations on the problem solved. So is this it? Are you content, and done tuning your exhaust? If so, it was a fun journey wasn't it.

You had spoken like you had the problem solved back when you added the stock resonator and Zoomers tip to your JBA exhaust. What happened with that?

As hard as it is to wrap my mind around it, I don't think I would have gone through so much trouble. I went with something I knew I'd like (Borla) and have experienced very little drone. I like the "drone" of my Borla. I've ridden in Flowmasters with my buddy's Silverado and glasspacks on another Silverado and they sound like sh*t compared to it. Granted, I do like some Flowmasters on some trucks, it's too much of a varied sound for me to like.
Many I ask how much you spent on all your different exhaust systems plus cost of install/fabrication?
I must admit, I like the sound of the flowmaster better than any I've tried, and I know that the sound will not change, i think borla will serve just as well because of the metallic mesh inside. to anser your questions about the jba system, i added the factory resonator, which is a bit shorter that the aero piece. mine is working fine off the bat, it should improve a little when the ecu completely adjusts. it took some time and money, but i'm there now. aero- turbine, makes a 3" model (AR-50) also. conclusion: the longer the resonator the better the benefit. sold the jba system to a guy in dallas.

Could you possibly type a post that documents all the different exhaust systems you've had and how long you had each of them, modifications you've done to each and the results along with the pros and cons of each set-up? I think it would be valuable info. for anyone thinking about making a change to their current exhaust.
I think I will try firecrew's setup even though I am not a flowmaster fan and I already have an AR25. It sounds like the aero 187 will be too loud for me. As long as it is fairly quite at 70+ that will be fine and no drone. What did you mean by "sweet" sounding at 60+ (much louder than stock)? I do like the lower pitch sound from the A/T's, flowmasters usually are not that low in pitch (but I have not heard a 70 series only 40 & 50's). Also are you using the stock tip? Thanks!
