Who has The Knocky Knocky in the Motor on cold Starts?
I heard the knocking sound for the first time from my motor today. 0 degrees, truck outside for 24 hours and I put it in gear within about 30 seconds after a cold start. All I was doing was pulling it into the garage. Never heard this sound before though I have read on here about many others experiencing it.I am not gonna go to the dealer about it since its apparently a normal sound from this motor and I usually let it warm up for at least 15 minutes before driving off. So whos got the knock?

I Experience The Same Thing I Have A 4.7 I'll Wait A Little While Til It Gets Really Loud Before It Goes To The Dealer Don't Want People's Hands All Over My Truck

guntech...this aint no ticking sound I heard, It was definately something in the lower end and a sound I normally would dread hearing in any vehicle (seriously) but if other folks are hearing it and its hereditary to this motor whats a guy to do? I have started this truck in colder temps than 0 degrees and never heard it but I never started it and drove off within a minute of start up cold before today. Something to wonder about I guess. Got another 95,500 miles of warranty so I aint worrying! <grin> This will be the first winter in extreme cold for the new Tundra so we'll see what happens. A tech buddy of mine at Toyota said it will be interesting to see what winter (-50 degree temps) brings with the 5.7L and the 6spd. I hope this isn't a taste of it!

Man, I can't even imagine 0 degrees! It was 56 at my house early this morning. Have you thought of an engine block heater?? I am surprised Toyota doesn't include a block heater in it's "Cold Kit" option. I have seen aftermarket electric heaters that look like a small heating pad that attaches to the pan to keep the oil warm.

I haven't heard the noise on a Tundra yet but I know some Lexus vehicles with the "G" series motors have a knocking noise coming from the VVTi gears. The noise is only on cold start up and lasts for about 3-4 secs.
Re: Who has The Knocky Knocky in the Motor on cold Starts?
Mine don't knock, but...
I thought I might throw this out there...I know the oil companies are changing over to their "winter" mixtures right now, I wonder if this might have something to do with this. We haven't really heard much about this issue since March, right about the time they were changing over to summer mixtures....hmmmmm?
AK, also, are you running 5w-20 or 0w-20?

Amen. I know I keep harping on this but I keep repeating this is to substantial to be described as a ticking that is customary for many new engines. I was wondering How in Alaska at the cold temps you weren't hearing this. I notice it in the summer as well though. I just changed to Mobil 0w20 and it did quiet some, but that could just be my other oil was getting long in the tooth.

Re: Who has The Knocky Knocky in the Motor on cold Starts?
I have 0W20 Mobil 1 in my motor too so I have a hard time believing that its a lubrication issue.
I dont normally plug gas vehicles in till it gets below about -10, heck even my Dodge Diesel would start at -10 after sitting all night. Whatever this sound is it will surely get some attention up here as we start to see some colder temps. I know for a fact theres several new Tundras here on Ft Wainwright in military housing (I see them all the time driving around housing) that dont live in garages, not to mention the ones in town, these things are everywhere anymore, so I guess time will tell.
Some would definately refer to the sound as a tap tap tap, but I have worked around vehicles in the car business long enough to know when a tap is top end noise and a tap is a lower end noise. Cant possibly imagine what I heard being anything good long term . But what do I know. <grin>

I think you'll find that if you only let the truck warm up for less than a minute, put it in drive and gently accelerate you will hear this noise everytime regardless of temp. Always takes 5 minutes after engine is completely warmed till it goes away. I wonder if those that say they don't hear it always let their truck warm for more than a few minutes before placing in drive. You won't hear it unless you place some load on the engine.
