Have the 2007 issues been addressed for the 2008 model?
Hi everyone -
New guy here and a search didn't reveal an answer to this question. A thousand pardons if it's out there and I missed it
I'm deciding between the Tundra and the Chevy. The performance of the Toyota puts it ahead of the Chevy but, after some reading here (and at other Tundra forums), I'm a bit concerned with the flimsy tailgate, transmission problems, and interior paint flaking. Does anyone know if these issues have been resolved for the 2008 model year?
Re: Have the 2007 issues been addressed for the 2008 model?
What issues are you concerned about from the Chevy? I would think they would far outweigh the minor Tundra issues.
Do you plan on towing? drum brakes on the chevy
Resale value on Chevy is usually low after a few years. Inlaws 03 Trailblazer is worth $4500.
They have transmission problems also. Inlaws transmission was replace at 70,000 along with other problems.
Re: Have the 2007 issues been addressed for the 2008 model?
No, the tailgate has not been redesigned.
The transmission issue has supposedly been taken care of, and I have not seen any posts of people with october or november built trucks having the rumble, but they just started implementing the new TQ recently.
The paint on my dash has not started flacking or scratching. But it is cheap looking, and I doubt it will be changed as the new sequioa has the same dash.
Re: Have the 2007 issues been addressed for the 2008 model?
I've had my 2007 for 4 months with no problems on the motor, transmission, rumble, or tailgate problems. And I have no paint flaking off anything.
Yes, the dash and other parts could have been designed with better material, but I have noticed that one advantage is that it cleans up nicely if you spill something or get grease on it. I have the Black dash, with berle wood like trim, since I have the 5.7 LTD dbl cab. Interior is grey/black and all seats are leather. All of that material is well made.
Re: Have the 2007 issues been addressed for the 2008 model?
I'm looking at this truck to help carry my toys (street and dirt motorcycles, an ATV, and rarely the family boat). But, having read the tailgate issues (and comparing it closely to the Chevy), I'm not sure it could hold me (250lbs) and one of my street bikes (450 lbs) to load it...
It will be my only vehicle so it needs to do it all! I'll have to get over the crappy stereo and the even worse placement...
Re: Have the 2007 issues been addressed for the 2008 model?
My dealer said that Toyota has agreed to replace every tailgate while they are working on a fix for the entire fleet. If my tailgate starts to break, they will replace it free of charge, and the tailgates even come pre-painted. That sounds like it's not much of a real issue. I've owned every other brand, and this truck is light years ahead of the competition.

If that's the case for damaged lift gates and the TC issue has been addressed (looks like it has) I just need to get over the stereo issue!

But I wonder what the point of replacing the tailgate is if they are replacing them with the same design of tailgate. Seems like a big waste of effort. Once they fix the tailgate design, then I can see getting it replaced. Mine has small cracks on the seams, but I'm going to wait until a redesigned version is available before I ask for an exchange.
Re: Have the 2007 issues been addressed for the 2008 model?
I saw a 2008 at the dealership the other day when I ordered mine and the
Fleet Manager showed me the difference between the 2007's and the 2008's tailgates. The interior/exterior tailgate skin seam has been changed to rectify the situation and make the tailgate sturdier. We'll see when mine gets here. I'll be testing it out.

Re: Have the 2007 issues been addressed for the 2008 model?
Toyota is a leader in virtually every auto segment except for full size pick ups. They have invested billions in a new plant and design to bring this truck to the market. The stakes are high not only in lost investment but also a share of a very lucrative market. Ford, GM and Dodge make far more on each truck sold than other vehicles. Toyota is not going to walk away from this market and will do right by any problems. The tailgate is relatively easy to fix in the scheme of things. It comes on and off easily so a strudier replacment would be an easy fix.
If you have concerns, make sure you buy the Toyota bed liner and consider and over the tailgate ramps. Get a wood kit if you don't like the dash - easy fixes.
I have had my '07 for a couple of months without any problems. I don't typically load stuff via a ramp and bought the Toyota drop-in liner and bed rails option. Its pretty cool and only $350 list.
I always had Fords and looked at the other brands. The Chevy is a nice truck but I think Toyota has a better reputation.
BTW - My 2001 Ford F150 SuperCrew needed a new transmission at 9k miles and a new engine at 50k miles. Fortunately both were covered under warranty. I was told by the dealer that both problems were not uncommon.
