Video on the NAV screen from another video source!!!
OK! Finally.
From the beginning I got 6CD JBL. Wanted NAV (dealer did not have that truck and I wanted 0% for 60 month) All in all I saved some cash by doing it this way. So I was 100% sure I will get the NAV, stock or aftermarket. But to make everything work meaning buttons on steering wheel Bluetooth, I went with stock NAV. Bought new unit from Canada on ebay. And to tell you the truth I like it a lot. You can get better aftermarket units, but marry those to stock JBL, Bluetooth and steering wheel buttons will be a huge challenge. The install was simple, all the stuff for install was provided and instructions too.
Next thing was getting the BackUp camera. Wanted to go stock, but after evaluating every option decided not to. First the stock camera is $300, second the wiring for it is in overhead. Did not want to install another monitor above the mirror, wanted to connect the camera to the head unit. So I bought the Pioneer NB-BC2 http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/v3/pg/product/details/0,,2076_310069685_377543200,00.html?compName=PNA_V 3_ProductDetailsComponent . You can buy one for $180. The quality is amazing; I did not even imagine that during the night it will give me a color picture!
The minus side - does not look stock. Sticks out a little
The good stuff: Cheaper, excellent quality, can use it when tailgate down or if it fell off. That is useful, because I have CM and not everything fits in the bed.
Now the fun part. Got the 9" Overhead DVD Player by INVISION. Sparks Toyota (Thanks to Sparks, good price and superb service! Ken, Mark thanks a lot! The first unit was defective, the new one arrived by next day shipping.)
I was on the fence on buying Alpine PKG-RSE2http://www.alpine-usa.com/US-en/products/product.php?model=PKG-RSE2 or Invision. Bought Invision for stock look, matching color and good reputation. The quality of the unit is very good. I liked that it blends in the car and will not be a black spot on the roof, like Alpine, has 2 video inputs, one hidden (you can run the wires behind panels under the seat for PS2 or run to dashboard and get some connectors for video iPod) Or you can connect any of those directly (but the wires will be hanging out). Additional 2 headphones outputs, so you do not have to drain batteries on IR headphones included in the package (which was very nice, since guys at Sparks forgot to mention it on their website) or you can use them as a spare thing for the passenger and listen your own stuff while others watch DVD.
Built in TV tuner – excellent option, but you will get better TV signal only when you are sitting at the same spot, otherwise it will be changing while you are driving.
The sound from Overhead can also be transmitted through the head unit. However I was not impressed with the picture quality, would say average. The video looks better on the NAV screen (What I wanted!)This Overhead has a video output as well! (That will be explained later) Another thing if you close it, it turns off, so if you have a passenger only in front seat, the unit has to be slightly open to watch video on the NAV(works fine for me, does not obstruct the view at all). The unit does remember the part of the movie you were watching previously, but short on remembering that it suppose to transmit audio to NAV, for that you have to press the button on the overhead (I got used to it). Those are the only things that could be executed better, however I do not know how it would be using Alpine; these units are the same in price.
So now the best part. The video cable goes to the NAV from overhead and taps into rear camera wire. There is a little switch, that forces NAV to use this video while motion, the downside - you get a reminder to look around or something like that at the bottom of the NAV screen (cool with me, does not take much off the screen) Was blown away by the quality of the video on NAV.
The NAV works while it shows the picture from the overhead, however needed to be tweaked. The problem is it did not recalculated the route when I made the wrong turn, did not guide me with the voice, just notified when I arrived. (I think it has to do with tapping into backup). Couple tricks come with it. If you back up and then go forward, the screen will go to Map view (need to flip the switch to go to DVD) or if you want to look at the Map for a second, press the Map on the NAV or flip the switch, to go back to the movie – flip the switch.
I do not think that this is inconvenient, just to let you know. Do not ask me about wiring diagrams, professional installer did it by trial and error.
And Of Course DO NOT DRIVE AND WATCH MOVIES; that was done for my wife to be able to watch something with the kids on the long trips as a passenger!

Search for WileETundra posts he has this setup already and has it all documented already. I am waiting for him to come up with another way he said he was working on to add a second source without using the reverese inputs but we will have to wait and see. I hate to have to look at the bottom of the screen telling me to check my souroundings thats all.
Re: Video on the NAV screen from another video source!!!
Currently WilETundra is using the camera inputs as well. I've PMed him about it, and he said that it's low on his priority list to figure out the inputs from the DVD button on the Nav. It's not even anything that I need anyways, since I have RSES with my Nav. Also, there are third party devices such as that from VAISTech that would do it.

Actually interesting about VAISTech, I contacted them a few weeks back and there still beta testing it all (Waht they said) and said they didn't have anyone to test it out on the Tundra yet. I said well I could but I need more information on how your product works and how much will it cost in the end of testing and they never replied to any of my emails after that and send one back saying we will put you on a waiting list once the product becomes avaliable. Well for me reading a little between the lines, is we are running into a problem with this product and it wont do everything we promised yet so its not avaliable yet till we figure out how to do this. I think I will just wait it out and see what comes up. Guess I can always add a DVD player under the seat and tap the rear camera input rather cheap if I realy can't wait but for now I am content. Just need to build my pulse generator and I can atleast use my bluetooth and NAV as I drive.
Re: Video on the NAV screen from another video source!!!
Well, the vaistech will only do so much. I don't believe that the product will allow vehicle while in motion. That's why, if you want everything, you'd also need the nav-tv kit. The pulse generator will not allow you to watch video on the nav screen while the car is in motion. But between the vaistech product and the nav-tv kit, my belief is that it would work.

I believe that finally there will be something that gives me the possibility to have all the functions of NAV-Bluetooth and having video in motion the right way. When it comes out I'll buy one. For right now the wiring is there and the warning is fine.
That is why buying tundra in 2009 will be smart, all aftermarket stuff will be on shelves

I'm pretty sure you should be able to get rid of the backup screen message by using a hex editor and parsing through the LOADING.KWI of the nav DVD, eliminating the text with spaces, and burning a new one. You can PM me about this if you like. I've been playing around with putting a custom message there and with the opening screen of the 7.1 or eliminating the wording but it seemed to be more of a novelty but it would definitely help you out.

I'm interested. I was reprogramming GSM phones, I do not think that will be much different.

Re: Video on the NAV screen from another video source!!!
Great post. The stock camera points down so you can see the edge of your rear bumper. This helps a lot when backing because you know how close you can get before you hit. Just a FYI.
Re: Video on the NAV screen from another video source!!!
i agree i think i like the stock camera because i use it mainly to hook up my trailer and park so your camera location wouldnt work for me but good job on the mod ...

Agree on that.
This set up works for me, since I use sonar the most. However this camera helps to park closer to the walls and I finally able to see if my daughter is not playing hide and seek, when I back up the truck. Since the wiring is in place I can switch to the stock one anytime.
Backing to the trailer is also easy, since the camera is right there, where I need it.
