Jumbo Jet,
I can't tell by the pic of the location of that pin that is causing the rattle as you mentioned. The pic, of what appears to be the UPPER glove compartment (or was it the lower as you mentioned or was it the radio?)

also, how do you take out the upper & lower glove compartment? Thanks.

random,

The plastic piece is actually to the right of the radio opening. When you shine a light in there look down and to the right and you'll see it. Its alot easier to reach it if you stick your arm in there from up under the dash on the passengers side. You need to take the radio out to see it, but its not mandatory to fix it. With the radio out, you'll see that its two vents joining together.

To take the glove boxes out you'll need a 10mm socket and a phillips screw driver. Start by opening the lower box. Unclip the piston on the right of the lower box first. Next pinch the two sides of the lower box in so the tabs holding it in will clear the plastic frame that holds it all together. Put the lower box aside for now. Next there are a couple screws that need to be taken out on the lower half, one is a 10mm screw on the right and the others are phillips screws. Apart from the screws there are small clips holding it secure, but they come out easily. Pull out the lower frame for the box and put it aside.

The upper box comes out with a handful of phillips screws. There are 2 behind the small plastic circle covers inside on the back wall of the upper box. Reach your hand in from under the back of the lower box ( now you have room from removing the lower box's frame) and push those circle clips out revealing the 2 screws. Then you have 2 more screws on the upper part of the box and a couple on the lower part of the box. The box is also held in by clips but again they pop out very easily.

Taking the glove boxes out doesnt really give you more reaching room, just a better view of what youre looking for.

If you need to get the radio out, pop off the center console trim piece that the cup holders rest in. Its tricky to get a grip on it, but its only held in by clips, no screws there. Once the clips come loose PULL IT BACK, THEN UP. If you try to force it straight up and out you can scratch the plastic..... be carefull here.

Next pop out the cig. lighter assembly, it just pulls right out and unclip the wire harnesses. To remove the climate control you'll need to pop a few clips out of the silver instrument panel trim piece to release the on/off dial for the a/c fan. The climate control again pops out easily and then undo the wire harnesses. Once the climate control is out you will see four 10mm bolts holding the radio in place. Unscrew those bolts and the radio pulls out with a few clips and again undo the wire harnesses. Fit and finish is very tight on these trucks so be carefull not to force anything out and scratch the dash. If you follow that guideline, it should only take about 10 mins or less to get all that out. Once the radio and glove boxes are out you'll see the plastic piece perfectly.

Mark

i have a slight rattle in my dash. can't hear it while stereo is on but decided to try your fix. i reached inder the dash from passenger side as you suggested. ended up feeling either my bluetooth or sirius module just kinda under there unsecured. back to my stereo guy to ask him to tidy things up under there.

Thumbs up Re: Finally fixed my dash rattle

I had the exact same rattle. I went under the dash with the lower glove box out, and placed some old leftover carpet pad to force the pieces together, much as you used felt. This is definately the source of my rattle as well...I just didn't have the time to take pictures. Very nice writeup!!

So Jumbo Jet are you saying that the little plastic clip that holds the 2 peices of the air box together was your culprit? I just tore into mine and I duct taped the heater box together more tightly than it was and felted everything I could get my hands on back there. Lots of rattled could be heard by wiggling this and lighty tappin that. We'll see if mine is fixed here in a little bit.

In my particular case it was the two plastic vents rubbing together causing a rattle/popping sound. I couldnt see any clips from that angle so I dont know for sure what the exact piece was........ I just grabbed that flat piece to get it to make the noise. If you take the radio out you will see the small plastic piece that I grabbed to duplicate the sound down to the right. By moving that up and down it made the sound loud and clear. By adding pressure to the two vents the sound stopped, so I stuffed the area tight with a bunch of felt and it quit.

Hopefully your duct tape and felt works too.

Mine isn't gone even after stuffing foam and taping things like a lunatic, I am just sure mine is that windshield ticking TSB which doesn't sound like a quick easy fix. Whatever it is its very hard to duplicate by grabbing and wiggling stuff its right where my dash meets the windshield.

Rattle fixed. My installer secured everything he could find behind the dash. So while doing that my steering wheel control is now malfunctioning for my AVIC D3. Back to the installer tomorrow. On top of that, my dealer did not rplace my oil cap during my oil change on Saturday and I'm just finding out

On a good note, it's amazing how much more solid this truck feels with those rattles gone

I had this same rattle.....it was coming from dangling wires in the overhead console on the right hand side where the light fixture is. Just stuffed some foam up there and no more rattle. Might be worth a shot!

Dude, great "find" and fix by you. I have taken my 07 DC to the dealer three times and all three times they say, "yep we found it and fixed it." BS, still the same rattle from the same area... Idiots. I guess I'll have to fix it myself and I work for Toyota!!!
