OK, I have had my two gloves boxes out about 3 times, maybe 4, chasing rattles. The first rattle fix was easy; it was a real bad rattle/vibration on the right side of the dash. Some foam stuffed up underneath the dash at the right end, behind the glove boxes, where the dash meets the window/inside firewall, fixed that loud one.

But then I had a persistent tick/rattle from underneath the dash near the clock/temp display. A slight bump would make it go, and a sharp turn would also. It sounded almost like a screw rolling around or a cable vibrating. Several tries using the fix Jumbo Jet artfully described, and that has worked for several folks, just didn't work for me. I have an SR5 and I think the ducting is slightly different from a Limited, which I think Jumbo’s truck is. I don’t think mine had the little black tab in his picture that he shook to make his rattle happen. But I tried stuffing foam around anyway, with only the two glove boxes out. No luck.

So I bit it and removed the cup holder, the cig lighter panel, A/C controls, and radio. Bingo. Right behind the radio are the wires for the clock, temp display, alarm, etc. The wires are encased in a flat fairly hard plastic liner that dangles down a bit and barely sits on part of the defroster ducting. That was my rattle. The plastic wire casing bouncing and sliding on the defrost duct. I lined the top of the duct with foam, and encased the wiring in some. Put it all back together and road tested with no noises.

I hope for the '08 guys' sake someone at Toyota looks at some of these complaints and fixes, and takes note. This would be an easy factory Q/C fix. Kaizen Toyota ....

Thanks for posting an update...the more places we are aware of that can potentially create these rattles, the easier to loc & fix... B.

Thanks! I'll try this when I come back this week from a business trip. I've only noticed mine when cold, but wires tapping on the defroster vent for the windshield sounds like a good culprit

My 07 CM/Ltd also has this PITA rattle in the passenger side of the dash...

I have a question/observation:
- If this is as common a problem with the model (and it seems to be also in the 08's) what is Toyota doing about it? It would appear to be an common, obvious design/manufacture flaw. For the amount of money we spend on a Tundra (I'm guessing between 35K - 45K, depending on model and options), IMHO, I have to ask myself why the hell are we having to do jury-rigging to correct the problem?

You don't have to rig anything take it to you local dealer and let them have it for a couple of days ( like my dealership wanted it they said 2-4 days to take apart drive around and the such ) Me i would rather spend a few minutes to a few hours fixing myself than a couple days with them ) Besides if you are even a little mech . inclined you will take better care of your truck then the average youngin at the dealer...Just my 02cents...

Jumbo Jet will become famous soon enough.
Default Re: Finally fixed my dash rattle

When mine began making noise I took it up to the dealer for an oil change and mentioned the rattle to the service manager. He said once they found it all they would do is stuff some foam or felt in the area until it stopped. I figured why put myself out by letting the dealer have my truck for 2 days when I can probably fix this myself in an hour using the same fix they were going to.

After owning a couple Chevys I became a rattle chasing expert, so I was up to the challenge. Lucky for me I was able to find it and fix it within a few minutes once I took the dash apart. Doing it myself I was able to take my time and make sure nothing was scratched or damaged. They techs at the dealer care about your car, but only to an extent. No ones going to take better care of your car than you would. Taking the dash apart on these trucks is simple, but if you dont feel like it than you could always take it in. I totally understand the frustration of having rattles and not knowing where they're coming from. But with a little patience its a very easy fix.

I guess I didn't consider my dash rattle as a warranty Item. Pull over, freak out, smack the speaker hard a few times, ta da! Fixed! 3 months rattle free.

Hey Guys, I Have A 2007 Crewmax And I Too Started Hearing A Rattle That Seemed To Be Coming From The Glove Box. I Followed How (jumbo Jet) Fixed His But Didn't Get The Same Results. I Had My Wife Whom Thought I Was Crazy Drive Me Around So I Could Listen And Find This Damn Rattle, after About 10 Minutes The Rattle Started Getting Louder And Louder My Wife Couldn't Believe A Truck With 4,000 Miles Would Do This. Man I Was Getting Pissed. I Called The Dealer And The Service Manager Said Bring It Down So A Tech. Can Take A Look. I Told The Tech. I'm Not Crazy Or Hearing Things And To My Surprise He Said I Know You Would Not Be Hear If There Wasn't Something Wrong. I Drove While The Tech Sit In The Passenger Side To Listen Now This Was When Both Glove Box's Were Removed. After About An Hour He Started Tapping Around On Everything Dash, etc. When He Tapped Where The Headliner Is Close To The Windshield To The Right Of The Maplights There It Was That Disturbing Rattle . The Tech. Found A Wire Loose In The Headliner. He Said The Headliner Has A Diagram That The Wires Are Glued To And There Wasn't Any Glue In That Particular Spot So He Put Foam Around It And Glued It To The Headliner Thank God, It's Fixed.i Can't Believe How Much Stronger The Truck Sounds With No Rattles Good Luck To All And Thank's.

Mine is fixed. The rattle turned out to be the air vent tapping against a metal support piece. I simply shimmed it so it has some pressure pushing up on the tube, and whadyaknow. Thanks for all the info in this thread. I never would have even guessed that this rattle was coming from that vent had someone not mentioned to check it.

Had the service & parts manager at the local Toyota dealership take a ride to hear the creaking noise in my 08 Crewmax... he listened for about a mile and identified the source- the 2 piece plastic sleeve that the rearview mirror power wire is covered with. He pushed it firmly back up in the headliner... NO MORE SQUEAKS OR RATTLES!!!
