After 7 months of dealing with this annoying rattle, I finally beat it. I took the radio, climate control and both glove boxes out and had my wife drive around the block while I looked for it. It appeared to be coming from passengers side right behind the lower glovebox. Once we got home (was getting car sick from laying upside down under the dash) I stuck a light up there and felt around for a few minutes before I was able to get it to make the noise again. I dont know if its the same rattle that TerryB47 had but I found mine where two airvents connected just under the dash behind the lower glove box. There is a small piece of plastic that sticks out and if I grabbed it and moved it, it would make the sound loud and clear.
The piece is most visible if you come in from the radio, but you dont have to remove the radio to get it.
This is a close up of the culprit.
I found that if pressure were put on the vents the noise stopped. I had a bunch of felt laying around so I stuffed it tight between the vent and dash to push the pieces snug together.
Then I grabbed that small piece of plastic sticking out and shook the heck out of it. No more noise!!! Drove it around the block and down the road a few miles and its perfect!!
To fix this you dont have to take out the radio, but it does make it easier to see what you need to grab.
I'll have to look and see if this is the noise I'm getting. Though it sounds like mines tapping on the windshield right by the temp/time display.
Thats exactly where my creak/rattle is, its a real PITA when the truck is real cold after sitting outside all night. Its not near as bad when the truck spends the night in my warm garage.

Outstanding job of both describing it and hunting it down. Stellar job of photographing it. That makes it easy for any of us to figure it out and duplicate the fix. Big thumbs up to you bro!
Same rattle, same fix. Glad you got it--interesting to see the pictures of it after using the braile method.
Terry
Great Terry. I wasnt sure if what you were describing was what I had too. You mentioned a group of wires you grabbed so I didnt know if we were reaching in the same spot. I didnt really see a group of wires in there.

At first I thought the same thing. I would have sworn it was coming from the dash and window area. Even after taking the dash apart and having the wife drive it while I hunted, I could have sworn more than once it was coming from the dash behind the clock. The dash is pretty hollow in there and I think the noise echos off of all the plastic and tricks your ears. Once we got home and I accidently grabbed that piece, there was no doubt I had found the problem.
When you reach your hand up there you will be about elbow deep into the dash, so you end up pretty close to the window when you grab that plastic piece, so I think thats why I was thinking also that it was where the dash meets the window. To get to it without taking the radio or gloveboxes out, lay on your back (or side) on the pass. side floor and with your right arm reach up into the dash thru the opening next to the center console. You'll find the piece sticking out as you get closer to the top of the dash. Pull on the piece and it should make the noise.
With the radio out and a clear view of the inside I could easily tell it was the two pieces of plastic rubbing where the vent from the outside meets the vent going to the inside ducts. Those two ducts rubbing caused me 7 months of grief. But once they were pushed tight together the noise quit.
I'm not saying yours is the same noise, but give that a shot and see if you can duplicate the sound.

There is a TSB for a rattle or noise that comes from the area of the windshield/dash. This sounds different from the rattle you fixed. The TSB listed below is not the complete bulletin, but if you have a similar noise you can ask your service manager about it. You can also search this forum for more info about the windshield tick noise because it was discussed some months ago.

I have a thunking noise that sounds like it comes from the grille by the time/display unit. It sounds like a wire harness bouncing off a duct. So maybe this is my fix. Thanks for the pictorial.

I had a rattle on the passengers side near the windshield.
The way you can find out for sure if jumbo's fix will do it, wedge a legal pad of paper between the windshield & dash.
If the rattle goes away, then jumbo's fix will work.
