Very nice post!
Do you know by any chance, how DRL should work on Limited if it came with it in AUTO position? Thanks

Yah, I think he was confused. From the CHP's web site:

Driving with just parking lights on (24800 VC). Vehicles that have factory-installed automatic daytime running lights must meet federal requirements and are legal.

Toyota does not make it easy to enable the Daytime Running Lights on the Tundra. Nor do they seam to have any interest in helping anyone add them themselves. But that’s ok, like everything else it can be reverse engineered.

If you have an interest in enabling DRL on your Tundra you might want to click on the PDF file attached to this post and save it to your computer.

If you can follow some directions and are capable of soldering a few wires you can get the DRL working.

This design will enable your DRL to operate as follows:

q With Ignition Key “On” the Turn Signal Bulbs (27-watts) light up as the DRL.

q With Headlights “On”, the DRL will be turned “Off”.

q When using the Turn Signal, the DRL for the side you wish to signal will turn off function as the DRL and turn on function as the Turn Signal until the turn indicator is canceled. Once Canceled DRL function will return.

q If you would like to be able to turn the DRL system off at any time you can install an “Optional Switch” (of your choice).

This simple design has been installed for the last three (3) months on seven (7) 2007 Toyota Tundra’s. All have operated flawlessly.

If you would like to enable DRL using the 27-watt turn signals, as Toyota does, on your Tundra this low cost design will work for you.

I hope some will find this useful.

Please see DIY-DRL.pdf attached.

After all of my searching I find your solution to be the one I'm going to try. I do have a question though. Why not use one relay and tie pin 30 to ground. In the normally closed condition that should apply a ground to pin 5 of the relay. When the headlights are enabled that should open the ground disabling the DRL function and have the signal lights operate normally. I just want to make sure I'm thinking correctly.

Thanks for figuring this out.

Great post Frank. Very detailed and easy to follow instructions.

I might try this however I will probably make it more complicated by installing a computerized switch. I do want to add the DRL function but I also want to add computerized control of the automatic light sensor, so that I can program the ON / OFF times based on the time of day and time of year. This will allow me to specify the headlights to come on at 4:00 pm CST during the dark winter months and 8:00 pm CST during the bright summer months. The factory setting on the auto sensor is never correct and I find it irritating that it incorrectly switches on and off as I drive through tunnels, shadows, cloudy or rainy days, etc. So I plan to use an old PDA that I have on the shelf to replace the auto sensor and control the lights based on my local time zone. The bonus is that it will be completely programmable with all sorts of options. Now I just need to find where the harness connector is for the auto sensor...

The instructions are great.
I have all the pieces and just want to clarify a point on the use of the Double Relay Plug\Socket.

My Double relay plug\socket came with long wires coming out of each post except on the left 87 post the wire jumps over to the 87 of the other relay. And the left 86 post it also jumps over to the 86 on the right relay.

I am assuming that I am going to cut these jumps and wire exactly as indicated in the diagram.

Is this right?

Also, when using a SPDT rocker switch on wire Relay A wire 86 I think I go into the center post on the switch and out one of the others. Do I leave the remaining post empty?

Thanks.

abutterworth,

I do not know the answer to your first question but can help with the second:

The posts on your switch should be labelled (or the packaging should indicate) that one post is power (positive), earth/ground (negative) and load. The wire in question should connect at the power and load posts and the earth/ground post should be connected to a grounding point on the truck.

Hope this helps, re.ac.tor

Any chance you'd put together a schematic for using the factory fogs as DRL's? That would be far more appealing to me than the turn lamp option. I could probably figure this out myself, but I'm battling a bout of laziness. I hope to be through it soon, but who knows?

Hi Marsh,

Sorry for the delay in replying. I was out of town.

You can get by with one relay as pin 30 is in effect already connected to ground.

That said, I can tell you how to do it with no relays too, but both present a problem that is not “Factory Like”. One relay or no relay will turn the DRLs “On” when the ignition key is on. This is good.

But….

Neither of these means (one relay or no relay) will turn the DRL “Off” when the headlights are on. If you don’t mind having the DRLs “ON” when your headlights are on then you can give it try.

To do it with NO Relays, simply cut the gray wire going to pin #5 on J29 and connect it directly to ground. Tape off the other side of this cut wire.

Now when Ignition key is “On”, DRL will be on. They just won't shut off when the headlights are on. (You still need to install the DRL Relay)

Hope this helps you out my friend.

Have a great night,

Frank

Sounds like a great project you've got going there. I would be interested in learning how you do this.

I should have some time tomorrow. I will try to find the harness connector for the auto sensor you are needing. As I do not have this feature on my Tundra, my source will have to be the factory electrical manual. Perhaps it will help.

You got it! Just cut those wires on your double socket and wire things up as shown in the diagram and it will work fine for you.

Have a great evening,

Is there any way to stop the sunroof airdefector on the 07 crewmax limited from changing from the low speed position to the high speed position and just make it stay in the high speed configuration??

Everything went fine with the install. I now have DRL, so I can now register my Truck in Canada. Thanks!

One thing. If I put the parking brake on and then turn on the truck the DRLs are still on. Did I wire something wrong or does this feature not work. Not concerned unless I have a loose wire somewhere or the job isnt grounded properly.
