Re: How to Improve the Gas Mileage (computer reading)?
The only aftermarket part I put so far is the Tonneau cover. I believe (not scientific) it actually does help with the mpg. I say this because I expected my mpg to drop about 2 mpg since the cold weather has come in but so far it's been steady. I get about 16.5 mpg 70% city/ 30% freeway. I live in Cali and I know it doesn't get as cold as places like Chicago but it gets cold enough to normally affect my mpg and that's my .02

Let us know what your mileage is when you have 1,500 miles or there abouts on it. During the initial break in periods of most engines one can expect to get non-published or below average economy and even performance. It is pretty much the norm to expect to pick up mileage after the break in period.

so i'm at 9000miles now and getting about 13 mpg all city driving, the best i ever got was 15.2 during summer and really feathering the gas pedal, not having ANY one more time ANY pleasure from driving my truck, so i decided to drive normally and thats what i'm getting, but at least not complaning about it. just really wonder how some of you can get something like 17 18 mpg in city which i have problem getting on highway (don't tell me to cruise 60 mph cause its not my way of driving

I don't get 17-18 city not matter how easy I drive. I do get 14+ to 15+ city by easing it away from stops and barely giving it gas when driving. Easing down to stops and anticipating them helps too. You have to drive it like there is an egg under the gas pedal. I do that sometimes and other times when I'm not worried about mileage I give it hell and the MPG's go down. One other factor is it's flat here in Southwest Florida.

Re: How to Improve the Gas Mileage (computer reading)?
I had Tonneau cover installed, trifecta, light weight, cheap, water tight and so on. So improvement on highway trips, like 1-2mpg. After got TRD CAI saw some improvement in the city like 1 mpg the most. Installed Corsa exhaust, mpg went down, but only because I press the pedal pretty hard now. Anyway to sum up. The truck now delivers 14.5 - 15.5 mpg city. Even better if I leave my lead shoes at home
However the best mpg I got was when I was driving 60-65mph on the highway. That is the only way to get really nice mileage. Going 70 or more will be about 3 mpg lower then going 60-65. Try and see for yourself.

This is true. New, my truck put up numbers like 10 or 11 with a mix of city/highway. Now, I get 13 to 14 combined. Nice improvement but I do wish I could get EPA ratings. My 2001 Wranger had 170K miles on it when I traded it for Tundra, rated at 16/19 EPA, and I always managed 18 to 20 with exact same driving conditions. Actually, I had 31" Goodyear MTR tires on it, so it should have been worse.
Just want to add: rudeelanda - Excellent post. Great info. Thanks for doing the research and posting here.
Re: How to Improve the Gas Mileage (computer reading)?
Just making sure everybody is looking at the same readout.....Sounds like some are like "yea I get 15 but later that day it shot right up to 21!" NO thats just instantaneous mpg. The average mpg is the readout we should all be looking at. Anybody that is getting over 15-16 in the city is really feathering the the throttle at all times lol.

Re: How to Improve the Gas Mileage (computer reading)?
I love reading these posts they are informative and interesting. thank you. My Dc TRD 4x4 big engine got 18.8 from so Cal to Vegas at 70mph. I love this truck. I will try some of the other speeds and see what I get. I did change my air filter to a free flowing reusable but that is all that has been changed.
Re: How to Improve the Gas Mileage (computer reading)?
I just got back from a trip to FL; pleased to report max mpg was:
when set cruise to 69 mph with no AC, 18.2
Varied speeds from 75-90 with ac - 14/15
I also noticed that if you try to use cruise control at 79 it has a much harder time keeping up versus 69 mph. Many more down shifts at 79.
Most of my "city" driving is during my 2.2 mile commute to work (yes, I SUCK!!) speed is between 25-45 mph and I will get from 10-12 mpg (I have to punch it every once in a while).
