TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Advice needed", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I traded by F150 King Ranch on a demo 07 Tundra DC TRD yesterday. On certain portions of the interstate the Tundra shakes strongly in the high 60mph to high 70mph range. At first I thought this was the torque converter problem I read about in this great forum, but the dealer said that problem occurs at much lower speeds, and that it was just probably how the truck drives.
I can't believe that it is normal for a truck to shake that much on the interstate at those speeds. I have owned a number of sports cars and other trucks including and F350 duelly which was a rough ride when not towing a big trailer, but nothing like this.
I really love the Tundra except for this problem. The power and handling are great, and I like the looks too. One good thing is that there are NO rattles during this shaking. It is very solid.
Does the truck have after market wheels/tires? Any visable damage on the wheels? Like previously posted, I would strongly suspect wheel balance issues over any tranny problems. Try getting back with your salesman. He/she should be able to get the truck run though the shop quickly for a complete check out. Try to get a mechanic to ride/drive with you. If they can experience the same vibration it would be very benificial to sorting it out.
Welcome to the Toyota family. Hope your troubles are only a hiccup and you have the Tundra for many trouble free years...

If it is a "demo" vehicle, there is a good chance that some salesman rode it hard and put it away wet a few times. I would take it back and have the tires looked at first, balanced and road force measured. Then move on to other things.

don't fret, you only have a minor problem, my truck had the 20'' wheels at purchase, when i picked it up the steering wheel shook at highway speeds( out of balance). bed bounce will not make your truck shake on normal roads, fact'

Or try eliminating other obvious things first, like getting the tires balanced....
Getting the tires balanced is the first place for you to start. Also, on highways/interstats that are concrete (not blacktop), sometimes they are poured in sections that are just the right length to be troublesome to really long wheelbased trucks. I doubt you have a long bed since you said it was a demo, but perhaps some of the little ole DC short beds or CMs (they have the same wheel base) have the problem too.
There's a section of interstate that's really bad in Las Vegas (215/15 interchage), so when we travel to there to visit my parents, my 2 yr old gets a kick out of the jarring. It's only about a 1 mile section though. The first time I ever encounterd it I was driving an F-350 crewcab longbed work truck and actually pulled off the interstate to crawl underneath and see what was wrong.
Mine does not shake, but I backup what the other poster said about the sales people. My first test drive the saleman took it out at first. He stomped on it and said "check out that power!" Then he took it up to 55 told me to hold on and slammed on the brakes saying "best brakes in it's class!" I said I am interested in buying one later, but not that one. LOL
Thanks for all the information! I did have a tech ride with me, but not over the roads in question, and the shake was very mild only in one section of the interstate. He thought it was just the ride, and suggested I buy some "weight kit" to put in the back. I'll be damned if I am going to weigh down the truck. One of the reasons I bought it was for the power.
If it was wheel balance, wouldn't it shake at those speeds on all roads?
I know the dealer will take care of me. I know the owner casually, and we have a lot of the same friends. The salesman is also a friend. Right now, I am just frustrated, and hope it is not just how the truck suspension acts normally.

that is exactly what my salesamn did....exactly! thought he was going to rear-end a car at the redlight showing me the brakes
My truck has the same problem. It bounces on certain freeway section (they called it "ripple" here I think). I got a cap on but that doesn't cure the bounce. So how can we get Toyota fix this? Any petition we can sign up (like that tailgate failure)? The vibration is not that bad, but I don't like it on a brand new truck. For now, I treat it as a "free" massage whever going over those sections.
