This is a discussion thread titled "Tranny Question", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Hey guys I bought my Tundra Feb. 26, 07. Knock on wood but no problems yet. Going on 9500 miles. I live in Kentucky, and it has started getting cold here. When my truck is cold it will not shift into 6th gear till it warms up. Even if I put it in the manual shift, it will still ride 5th for about a miile or 2. So I am going down the road around 2500 to 3000 rpms. I don't remember the truck acting like this last year. So is this normal or should I get it check out, cause my transmission is getting ready to go?

I just went for a drive with the wife to get some tacky christmas sweaters for a party tonight...I watched the Transmission Temp Guage this time, it was at about 1/4 before the truck would shift to 6th, engine temp guage still at 1/3rd.

My 07 tundra does not want to shift past third gear at all when it's cold. my tranny also does the "rumble strip" at any temperature. I took the truck to TOYOTA dealer yesterday so they would have it cold this morning. They have just called me back and said, we cant find anything wrong with the truck on either issue.Has anyone else been dealing with these issues on their truck?
on cool mornings mine won't shift to 4th until over 2000 rpm after cold start. fine after about a mile. never got on a freeway w/ it that cold so have not experanced high gear reluctance.

I'll have to pay attention when she's cold in the morning. So far though, I have noticed a fair amount of what I describe as indecisiveness. When I let off the gas, slow down a bit, then get back on it (i.e. taking a corner), there can be a delay like it's deciding which gear to use. I have no reason to think my trannys malfunctioning, I think that's just the way it's made. Thus far, I'm disappointed in the transmission. I've never had an auto tranny that seemed to be asleep at the wheel like this one is sometimes. Overall, it's a great truck and I'll just have to get used to the damn electronics that do all the thinking anymore. These trucks are so electronic, that's it's scary. I turned around in a dirt parking lot earlier today and couldn't throw gravel at all because that damn VSC just killed the power from the engine, even though I had 'er floored. I don't want to have to physically stop and disable the VSC everytime I want to leave some tread on the ground, and I don't do that much. I'd consider myself a semi-normal driver, with a right boot that weighs a few more ounces then average. I'd rather see this VSC with the default being off, and then when driving conditions are harsh because of weather, then one would have the option to turn it on.
Of course, someday when I have the wife and kids with me, and sub-consciously swerve to miss a big black cow at night during a white-out snow storm (they're impossible to see in that condition), then maybe I'll be writing Toyota a thank you letter cause I didn't roll-over. However, under normal driving conditions it's frustrating and disappointing not to be able to drive a vehicle however one desires to.
does the 5.7 six speed oil warm up any faster than others because of the trans oil heating system tundra puts on? in mild climates, can you bypass the trans oil heater?
Since the weather has started to cool down I have definately noticed a difference in the way my truck shifts.
Have you guys noticed that with the first couple of take offs in the morning that the shifts are delayed and it makes it feel kind of sloppy?
My truck has done the rumble strip thing probably about 10 times since new. It is usually around 35 MPH accelerating or decelerating. It won't do it consistently enought to take it in to get looked at.

I agree 110% My tranny is much less impressive than I was lead to believe by the reviewing press. The most annoying thing to me is trying to pass, it kicks down one gear for a second before kicking down again to make real power....

Have it looked at.There is a tsb out. My dealer just changed my torque converter and rumble strip sound is gone.Mine also did it when downshifting from 6th to 5th under light load.good luck, john
Well, just got a little cold down in south texas. I just experience the delay shift at 30 mph. I believe second to third gear. If was only 50 F outside. Again, this morning, 57 F and a delay shift. Same gears. However, after about two miles, when tran heated up, truck shifted great. I feel bad for the truck owners living up north where it really gets cold.
I was concern about this but after coming here, I feel better. Good thing it only gets cold down here about seven days out of the year. Yea, just early this week we where at a nice 89 F.
Since Toyota made a running production change to the TC, that would indicated a design flaw. But then, why is it that some tranny's don't have this problem? I've never had it on mine (04-07 build).
