TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Had a RAM for a day", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Actually it was a loaner to the Optimist Club for the Christmas Parade.
We could have used our Tundra but the hassle of getting off the topper and removing all the dog gear........decided to go with the free loaner, plus the loaner was red and my truck is white.
Anyway - some reflections.
For the money you get a LOT more in the Tundra
The sheetmetal did not seem any thinner in the Tundra than the Ram - actually seemed beefier in some places
The Ram seems to to have a good bit more ground clearance but it was higher to climb into - could be that particular model but it was new, stock.
I did think the Ram was a better looking truck on the outside but I liked the Tundra inside better. I am one of those that thinks the Tundra looks like a darned bulldog, though.
The truck bed rails in the Ram were same height as the Tundra but the bed was MUCH shallower
I noticed how much thinner the tailgate was in the Ram which puts the support cables closer to the ouside edge. The construction of the tailgate appeard to be similar. Because the bed was higher, it was even harder to get into.
I did not drive it - my husband did but he is not very observant. I did not want to abuse the opportunity since it was loaned for a specific purpose.

I thought the Tundra had best in class ground clearance. Not true?

I would be surprised if the Tundra was best in class with ground clearance. There's a lot of low hangin' stuff there. Gas tank sticks out like a sore thumb if you look at the truck broadside.

X2..........One thing I liked about the Toy over the Denali was the GC/stance; but I wheeled my Cmax last week and cringed quite a bit at all the scraping sounds.
Oh well, I have an early Bronco to finish for serious off-roading.

Maybe on paper. Toyota has some optimistic measuring sticks in their tool bags so make sure you don't take their word for it. They spec the 1st gen Tundra width as only being about 2" narrower than my Dodge, but it's more like 10" here in the real world.

Are you sure you where looking at the Ram and not the Dakota. My neighbor has the 2007 Tundra and he and I were talking about how much thinner and lighter the sheet metal is in the Tundra. He was really surprised how much heavier my Tailgate was compared to his. It appeared that the Ram's tailgate was almost twice the weight. Maybe the 1/2 ton Ram and my 3/4 Ram are different.

No, the 1st Gen Tundra sits very high, I've owned one. It sits higher than any of the trucks from its debute to now. You forgot about the 2006 Tundra superbowl commercial where the competition drives over a tool box and gets caught up while the Tundra doesn't touch?

This was a definitely a new RAM with a 5.7L Hemi Engine and 20" tires. Looked it up and it was the 1500 Sport Edition Quad Cab in 4x4 with some extras.
I realize the specs say the Toyota (I have 4x4 TRD Dbl cab) is a full 2.8" higher than the Ram but it sure did not look it. I did not crawl under the trucks with a ruler so maybe my eyes decieved me but I know the rocker panels on the Ram were higher and it was more of a step up to get in.
The tailgate deinitely felt heavier in the Ram without the tailgate assist, but if you looked at the sheet metal it did not appear to be thicker around the cutouts for the tailgate lock, or the stake pockets or the bed sheet metal. The doors pushed in with about the same amount of force as the Tundra and overall the sheet metal looked similar. My husband who sells automotive body supplies (Clips & fastners) said everything has thinner sheet metal nowadays.
The thing was parked in the driveway right next to mine and my comparisons are strickly visual.
FWIW overall I still feel I got more for my money in getting the Tundra.

The Ram's tailgate is going to FEEL heavier, (I've felt one myself) but that is because the Tundra has a tailgate damper which helps to assist with lowering the tailgate. Unlatch the handle on the Tundra's tailgate and then take your hand away and let it fall then do the same on the Ram and watch and feel the difference.
