TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Doesnt anyone use this beast to tow??", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Been watching this forum for a month or so , prior to purchasing my 2008 DC 5.7 4X4.
Looks aside, (although I LOVE the looks) I was wondering if the majority of owners know what kind of beast they have in their driveway?
As an avid offshore fisherman , I needed a truck to tow my boat , yet something my wife could use as she primarily drives the truck. A 3/4 ton pick up was out of the question.
I had the oppurtunity to tow my Regulator yesterday , and all I can say is "WOW!!".
My rig is over 8K loaded , and from pulling power to suspension to braking , this truck was in complete control. I wont act as though you couldnt feel the trailer back there , but this truck kept its composure even during a pretty hard stop.
For people who dont tow , an 8K trailer shouldnt pose a problem for a truck with a 10K towing capacity. However most 1/2 ton Pickups and SUVs get pushed around quite a bit. They never really feel comfortable and at times feel downright dangerous.
I think this truck will rival my buddies 3/4 ton F250 in towing abilities.
Alot of new trucks have a towing capacity they have no business pulling.
To say Ive been impressed with my new truck , is a huge understatement.
And for any 1st Gen Tundra owners who arent impressed with the 2007+ , Ill let you hook my trailer to your truck first to see if I can change your mind
I disagree - there's a massive thread here called "what do you haul with your Tundra" or something like that. Lots of people here work, haul, and wheel their rides.
While I'm totally against street racing, the fact that owners are taking their trucks to legitimate drag strips and getting impressive ETs just adds another dimension to the awesomenessativity of the Tundra.

Yeah but count how many threads there are for racing. I mean come on. At any given time there are at least three threads on the first page of the forum.

So what??? To each their own, if you paid 30k+ for a truck, then you should be able to do what you please with it...off-road it, race it, lower it, lift it whatever YOU want, not what others want! It's stupid how people are always bashing on other people's likes or dislikes. And like the guy above said, it's good that you mostly see guys talking about how they took that racing to the track and not to the streets. The point here is, do what makes you happy and whats fun for you & your truck.

Search under my name. I tow an average of 13k lbs a day, 3 times daily. I even have a thread titled "I towed 20k lbs in my Tundra" All the threads have pics and photos!
I don't think it is so much "how much you tow" as " how long will my truck last, towing alot all the time". I think(I don't know anything) a heavy duty truck (f250) is going to be more durable, in the long run than our truck, towing alot of weight. I wonder how much it will cost to replace our transmission
I own both an F250 and a new Tundra. I haul a 4500 lb pressure washing rig around with both trucks. The F250 is a bumpy ride but doesn't move around near as much as the Tundra and feels safer but has a weak 5.4L motor with only 260 hp. 350 ft.lbs tourq. The Tundra has a much better drive train and smoother ride pulling the trailer. Only time will tell if the truck will hold up to everyday HD use.
I have an '01 with over 300,000 km, I tow with it all the time ( very stable control ) and beat up on my buddies with domestics ( especially in the mountain passes ). I also race it, tow other race cars, wash it, take it on vacation, drive it daily. Any more questions as to what you can do with a Tundra ? The newer ones have more power and capacity, so in my opinion it is a no brainer.
Yes, the Tundra is very impressive for a 1/2 ton and could probably be called a 2/3 ton. It's crazy how much trucks have grown in the last 5 years. The 1 tons are topping 16,000lbs. There's a video clip of a Dodge 3500 Dually pulling an earth mover that weighs 250,000lbs.
i tow a open race trailer & corvette race car ...2 months ago a raced i f150 up a slight hill and pulled him with the trailer & car ...hooo wee i loved my choice that day...still a comfort to hall or as daily driver.... ... ya the ford must have been a stone !!!
I bought mine for hauling and I'm way impressed. I regularly haul 10k or more on a flatbed rated for 12k. It actually wants to haul stuff and rides better with a load. It's the ultimate wood hauling beast that more than pays for itself every month. I have a DC long bed with lumber rack and shell and still get 16-18 mpg or about 12-14 hauling.
