TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Poor Gas Mileage-07 4.7", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I'm new.
Has there been any complaints about the gas mileage with the 4.7 liter? I have a 07 DBL cab that is getting less than 11 mpg city. I was hoping for better. It has about 5600 miles on it. We have a hybrid travel trailer that weighs about 4200lbs. At highway speeds we get less than 6 mpg.
Is it possible there is something wrong? Anyone else with similar problems?
All highway will be between 18-19 for my 4.7 DC 4X4 (65 mph), city type driving is around 13-14 and I tow a 17' boat that weighs about 2,000 lbs and I get 13-15 towing on the highway. I really like this motor. VERY strong and refined. That's actually pretty good mileage considering the weight (5,500 lbs) of the truck and it's really set up for towing with the 4:10 rear end. ANYBODY claiming much more is just kidding themselves.
I do mainly city driving, and my average MPG thing tells me that I get 13.2. The truck has almost 10,000 miles on it...so that is the engine settled in. I am also the type of person who really guns it, even after a stop light...I do notice that when I do decide to travel on the highway, I do not see a real increase in MPGs, but that's likely because the computer is figuring an average...so it seems reasonable...I know someone with a double cab similar to mine with the TRD (i don't have it) and the 5.7 and he says he gets almost 20 MPG highway...

I haven't used mine to tow anything yet, but I get about 16.7 mpg mixed
(probably 70 %city) and the mileage improves a pretty good bit for highway travel. I got high 18s on the highway a month or so back.

I consistently get 13.2 in the city and around the same when towing my 21' centerconsole with T-Top. Haven't towed it much on the freeway as I store it a few miles from the gulf.
Been keeping good records since I put the 2007 4.7 SR5 DC LB in service in early September. For mixed driving in my neighborhood (rural mostly, with some city miles) for 2010 miles, averaging about 15.4 mpg.
Took a trip to California over Thanksgiving using 1136 miles of mostly 2-lane roads at 55 to 65, and about 400 miles of I-5 in California where I had to keep speed up to 70-75 to avoid getting run over. Averaged 19.5 overall.
Did an experiment in Oregon where our speed limits are 55 on two-lane roads from Klamath Falls to home, keeping the tach at 2000 rpm for most of 200 miles; averaged 19.7 for that reach which included about 20% mountains.
This is not as good as my old V-6 Ranger, but I didn't expect it would be. Considering the comfort, quiet and passing power of the Tundra I am happy.
Thanks for the replies guys.
My initial thoughts were there is a problem. The mileage is horrible and you guys confirmed it. I will have to get the truck scoped at least. Any suggestions on what could cause this kind of mileage. I'm not really hard on the truck, and it should be broken in by now.
Unfortunately 6mpg isn't a typo. It barely gets that. The trailer is a hybrid, they are purpose built to be towed by SUV's and mini vans. I thought it would pull it with lots to spare but it struggles. I am dissappointed to say the least. Worst part is my dealer recommended the 4.7. The 5.7 wasn't even suggested.
I know that at my dealership, we frequently recommend the 5.7L, whether our customer tows or not. We have a hard time selling them on it with the price of gasoline...but I offer them personal insight from having a vehicle with the 4.7L...The 5.7L is the way to go!
