So just pull back and the whole thing will pop out. Having the shifter in "N" will allow you to pull further back on the trim piece and navigate it out.

You can also get to the 'cubby' by removing the upper dash cover (the silver thingy surrounding the speedo, etc). It is held in place by clips that will give way with a little tug. There are two harnesses to unplug (one on each side of the steering column) and you have to unclip four clips that hold the vinyl that fills the gaps around the steering column. This allows access from above the 'cubby' plate, which is actually clipped into the larger piece that surrounds the shifter. The cubby itself is clipped into the little plate with the tow/haul button in it, which is in turn clipped into the larger piece surrounding the shifter.
More than one way to skin a cat. I had my dash apart yesterday and moved my rear window switch to the blank right next to the tow/haul button. I was able to do it as described above without removing the console.
Good luck, let us know how it turns out.
