This is a discussion thread titled "How Did Your Tundra Do In The Ice Storm?", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
As being hit hard in the MidWest with ice storms was seeing how other people Toyota Tundra's are holding up. I went out to defrost mine that had about 1/8 " of ice builtup all over the truck and found the door handle was frozen and thought it would break if I pulled on it. I hit it with my hand to break loose and it did open. Don't know yet if there is any damage to the paint or handle yet until the rest melts. I did notice when defrosting the windshield that the defroster dosen't hit the wiperblades/arms to melts the ice from them. Has anyone else been having any problems?

Sounds like typical problems one would have with any truck during an ice storm.

I left work one evening to a thick coating of ice on mine. The door opend fine. It only took a few minutes for me to heat up the windshield enough to clean things off. These Tundras heat up fast........

I believe they heat up fast due to the alumnium block.
I'll know how my truck does in the snow/ice in about a week when I get home. Until then, I'll be taking my finals with 70* weather as it stands right now.
We've had about 7" snow in the last 48 hrs, and since we're in the desert, we see 20-40 degree temerature changes between our daily highs and lows, so what melts everyday turns to solid ice every night. Even with an inch or two, the roads can really be in a mess.
The Tundra performed wonderfully. The VSC is very very impressive if you drive with it on (default setting) in 2WD mode. When accelerating with the VSC on, it is very hard, almost impossible, to lose control. Even around corners, I'd give it extra gas to see how easy it'd spin on the ice, and the VSC would kill the un-needed additional power and the vehicle would maintain its track. I really was amazed. Of course, I spent most the last two days driving around town in 4WD because of the ice, and when in 4WD the VSC is automatically disabled, and still the Tundra handled great. I was surprised at how well the stock tires handled.
Now, that said...I'd rather have one of two things: 1) the default setting for the VSC would be OFF, and the driver would have the ability to turn it on when driving in bad weather, etc.; or, 2) I wish it was more convienent to disable the VSC - so, instead of having to be in Park and hold the button for 3 seconds to disable it, I'd rather one could be in any gear and all you had to do was hold the VSC button for 3 seconds to disable it. The second reason seems more plausible. The reason for this is, under normal, dry driving conditions I don't want the computer to kill extra power to the wheels if I stomp the gas pedal.
I will be driving in it tomorrow. I guess the Tundra will do ok in the ice tomorrow with 480 lb of tube sand in the bed. Was just trying to get some of the ice off before it gets too thick. It took awhile to defrost a 1/8" of ice off the windshield. Did you get hit hard with any snow or ice being in NM?
No...I've had ice though a couple weeks ago. I have an ice scraper and I just scraped the crap out the windshield. Ice fixed.
After living in CO, I've learned to just pull up the wipers at night before I go to bed when I think it will ice over. That way, they don't freeze to your windshield.
I am too impatient to let any of the built in defrosters take care of ice. I can usually have it all gone with my scraper before the truck is warm...but that's just me. I highly suggest you get a scraper if you don't have one. Don't get one of those girly small ones either...get a man sized scraper I'm talking about one of the big handled ones that are nice and long (usually have a brush on one side). You want the bigger one b/c this truck is so dang big.

Thank you for all the good information on how to drive in this ice having a 2wd. You don't have to be in park to turnoff the VSC system. I have been in drive and held the button down for 3 seconds to disable the VSC before.
Thanks again..
started both the jeep and the tundra, put them both on high defost, went back in the house to make coffee,
10-min later jeep is half clear of the 1/16 " ice, tundra windshield completely clear as well as side windows (heater wiper area turned off by itself).
since we have a steep hill to get out of our subdivision, i tried to make it up with the jeep first, no go with the 3-yr old all-season tires.
tundra went up it in 2-wd with the new this year blizzaks, kept steady throttle and did not worry abot all the noise the abs valve solenoids and abs pump made under the hood, it was slow going but felt like being pulled up on rope (never lost momentum) even with out weight in the back
What's the difference between VSC and Trac Control? I wasn't aware that you could turn off VSC? I know that I can hold down my trac control button..but I don't have a button for VSC.
we got our first hard snow/ice today and man do the stock tires blow ***. seriously need to replace them asap. stupid rugged trails

I didn't have any problems in the ice with the stock tires that came with the TRD option. I will wear them down before changing them with a different tire.
