TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Well Im picking mine up tomorrow", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I orginally posted about me getting a 07 DC with a 5.7 but that deal fell through because of the dealer trying to sell me a stripped model for the price of a semi loaded truck. So I checked around and found another dealer but was to late to get the one I wanted. To make a long story short Im instead getting a 07 DC w/4.7 that has alot of the extras for my price range. It is a proven drivetrain and it still has more torque, HP, and towing capicity than my 2003 f-150 lariat w/4.6, How is the 4.7 at towing and can it tow 8100 lbs saftely?
The most Ill probably ever tow is 7000 lbs, since it weights more than my f150 will itseem more sluggish in acceleration.
PS I have only test drove the 5.7 so thats why im asking
I had the 4.7 and the 5.7 is better. wait and get what you really want. The extras don't mean a thing if you feel like your "missing out" on the "Punch" and you will later

i agree. The 4.7 will end up burning more gas especially if towing as it will work way too hard compared to barely touching the gas on the 5.7. the difference is unreal bro, get the one you want. The little extras wont mean crap without that motor.

There are a lot of guys here that are more than happy with their 4.7, but if you are going to tow that much weight, you may want to hold off and wait for a 5.7 truck that you want. This 5.7 is a LOT of fun and tows like a beast.

I can't tell you if the 4.7L can tow 8100# safely, but I'd say it should do better than the first-gen Tundra towing (in general) because I assume it's slightly heavier, and has larger brakes.
I'd agree with the others in recommending holding out for the 5.7L, specifically and especially since you plan to tow with it.
My dad has a first-gen Tundra with the 4.7L, and his travel trailer is approx. 5000# dry. He said the engine does pretty good, but if you're looking at 7000# plus, I'd expect the engine to have to work a little harder.
Your decision also must factor in what type of towing experience you'll be satisfied with. Personally, I'm glad I went with the 5.7L for towing prowess and all-around more enjoyable driving experience, without a mpg penalty.
My travel trailer weighs in around 6700# dry. The 5.7L performs well, and the brakes are great. I'm definately not a hot rod driving around, in fact my wife often calls me "grandpa" while driving. But the 5.7L is soooo satisfying. Easily brings a grin to your face.
I have the 4.7 and love it On the other hand, i will probably never tow anything, i get 18-20 mpg, i got a killer deal and i am pretty sure that my engine wont break and transmission rumble. Plus, i went from a regular cab tacoma with a 2.4 to this truck.....to me it feels like i have the fastest vehicle on the road.
I'd buy the 5.7L. You are going to tow...you'd be crazy not to get the 5.7.
That's my opinion.

I have owned 2 4.7s. Now that I have the 5.7, there is no return. Pulling 7000 lbs will be alot easier for you and the truck with the 5.7. I get better mileage with the 5.7. Wait and get the Tundra you want.
Take it from someone who drives a 4.7L with the extra options because I didn't want to wait on a 5.7L with the options I wanted...you will definately regret the decision! I work for a Toyota dealership and I have driven 5.7s similarly equipped and I wish that I had just had the patience. But no, I wanted to get into the new truck as quickly as possible and didn't want to wait...I do regret it. The 13.1 mpg compared to my friend who has a 5.7 similarly equipped getting 15 city is enough of a reason for me to regret having waited...take this for what it's worth, from someone who made the mistake! Don't get me wrong, I love my truck. Just wish I had waited a little longer

Thanks guys for the quick replies, I am buying this truck for my business and need to buy one before the end of the year. Plus I am trying to keep my payments as low as possible and need a truck with more of a bland color aka white or silver. They do have a blue streak color 5.7 in my price range but I really didnt want that for the color, all my other vechicles are white. Well Im already set up to buy the 4.7 but im sure the dealer wont mind if i show up and change my mind. I guess Ill just see when I get there which I will go with, heck there offering 3000 back on '08s now.
This has reaaly been a tough, when I shopped for my fords I knew what I wanted.
Have your dealer do a search for the truck you want. 2 of the 3 Tundras I have bought, the dealer had to find for me. Dealers trade vehicles all the time. Good luck.

I was an inventory manager...this is absolutely true. I know that for certain customers, we have gone as far as Pennsylvania to obtain vehicles. We regularly go as far as 200 miles (often times three or more times a week) to obtain vehicles that are sometimes hard to find...If your dealer knows the value of a customer, they'll make it happen for you...
