TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Big Decision...", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Ok, I have to decide if I want to get a fully equipped 07 Tundra, that was a demo (the Mid Atlantic Regional Office drove it) with 6,000 miles on it. Or if I should wait until next year around this time. The 07 has everything. Its a limited double cab, with Nav, backup cam, leather, cold kit, tow package,Bedliner w/Deck Rail System, Running Boards, Mud Guards, Remote Start,Satellite Radio, TRD Dual Exhaust System, etc. I can get it for $34,500. Its MSRP is $44,500. It looks brand new.
If I get it now, its not going to get alot of use, due to the fact Im at the Naval Academy and will only be able to drive it on weekends.
I like the idea of getting it now, but Im afraid it will depricate too much within the next year even though im not using it that much.
But Im afraid if I wait until next year, I wont be able to find a used one, or another 08 demo, this equipped for this good of a price.
Are you opposed to buying used next year? That would best your 'best deal.' If you don't care about buying a brand new one. Wait until next year and buy a used one. Because Toyota is doing discounts and rebates on the Tundras, unfortunally for us...they aren't going to hold their value like other Toyotas..espically the Tacomas. It's nice for us now as we are buying new trucks for 10K off sticker, but we can't complain next year or the year after when we trade it in that they have lost 1/2 their value.
Id go ahead and get the 07...thats a really good deal.

If you don't need it yet, I wouldn't buy it. Your better off saving money right now. I see too many young military guys around here, buying brand new vehicles, only to sell them for a huge loss within a couple years.
You know what will happen as well as I do, you'll graduate, get stationed somewhere or shipped out and sell it.
Really dig down, why do you want it?
Just cause its cool?
Save your money now and buy yourself a new truck when you need it and will be using it.
Great deals come along everyday on everything, I know, it's what I do for a living.

The only way I'd get a demo is if they threw in the top Toyota extended warranty. A totally loaded rig like that was hard to find in '07.
I would buy a Limited crewmax for $34k great price.
I have seen a crap load of Double Cab's 4.7 liters being traded in and those prices for an sr5 is 23 the lowest i've seen. New Sr5 double cab 5.7 You can get around $25k (NON 4wd)....

Don't forget that Regional offices ALWAYS have demos on the road. They spread out their models (plenty of Tundras on the road) and most of them are loaded (I bought a demo with 6,232 miles on it with everything except the TRD options, which doesn't bother me since I don't really go off-roading) and I don't regret it. If you can deal with waiting, why spent the money now? But I should also be encouraging you to take that deal because the truck is super awesome and you won't regret it if you do decide to buy it...

I have $40k saved up (going to college for free has its perks )which I am not touching if I get the truck. I just got a career starter loan, which I would only spend a small precentage of that to get the truck, the rest would be saved for the future. I can afford the monthly payments as well.
As for the young military guys getting new trucks, I drive a lifted jeep wrangler right now, which I do not feel comfortable driving long distances in (i.e. Maryland to Florida). And there is no room for anything in the jeep, which is why I would like the truck before I graduate (more room, better handling, smoother ride, better mpg). After I graduate, I will hopefully be going to flight school (which is why I said FL), and I would be in flight school for roughly 2-3 years. By the time I get out of flight school and am able to be deployed, I will most likely have married my girlfriend, so I would just leave it at home when I am deployed. I will definately keep the truck until I am out of flight school and it is paid off. Maybe even longer. Plus, If I get it now, it will be paid off a year sooner, and then after I marry my girlfriend, we would have some money to get rid of her Honda Civic that she hates (she likes 4Runners like her dad has).
What do you think the resale of a truck like this would be in 5 years with average miles? I know its nothing amazing, because it will have depreciated for 5 years, but I would want to have a little to trade in if i needed too.
I know that I had an 04 before I bought my 07. I bought my 04 used with 52,000 miles on it and I paid $21,000 for it. I rolled $3,000 in negative equity from my first car into that vehicle. They gave me $19,000 for the truck a year later with 72,500 on the truck...So I was only tipped the same $3,000 that I was tipped from my first vehicle...which (unless my logic is screwed up) means that I didn't lose a dime on the truck...It may be a newly redone model, but it's still a Toyota...No car is worth the same five years later as it was on day one, but you can guarantee that your truck will be worth wha tit should be...not like the GMs, Dodges, and Fords that depreciate in a very sickening manner...
