TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Spray-in bedliner questions - need advice", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
After searching for a while, there is no question that the spray-in bedliner is the bedliner of choice for users of this forum. Specifically the Line-X brand. O.K. I'm in. But I have a few questions before I take the plunge and with all the knowledge and experience of everyone here I'm sure I'll get the answers, so thank you in advance.
1. Should I remove the bed caps and Line-X under them, or just go to the bottom of the bed?
2. What about the plastic plugs at the front of the bed - remove or Line-X them?
3. Is there a benefit to installing in warm weather, and should I wait until spring or summer?
4. Do I need to prep the tailgate before it's sprayed so that I can remove the panel to pop the latch actuating rod back into the plastic clip? Or do I just cut it with a razor knife when the time comes?
5. There are a few scratches/rub marks that go through to the bare metal in the bed already (damn thin paint). Do I need to prep these any special way, or do I just let the Line-X seal the paint?
These are the questions that I have, that I'm sure the installer would give me the "easy" answers for, so I look to you for the "best" answers. I also plan to remove the bed rail system, and just thread bolts back into the bed to protect the threads.
I'm sure there are a ton of other things I haven't thought of, so before I do this, please chime in with whatever advise and tips you might have, as I want to do this right the first time (and it doesn't seen that it may even be possible to remove it for a do-over). I'm sure there are things out there that you've said "I shoulda, coulda, woulda" to your bedliner.
Good questions Lardog,
I'm hooked in on this as well.....Thanks!

Your installer will do all of those things for you. You shouldnt have to mess with anything other than taking him the truck. My installer sprayed over the plastic plugs in the front. They did take out all the bolts and the bed rail system before they sprayed and then re-installed them afterwards.
Dont worry about the paint or scratches in the bed. They will sand or scuff the paint down anyway before the install so that the liner adheres to the truck. They will tape off the entire truck so you wont have any over spray.
Basically let the installer know exactly what you want. Walk them through what you would like them to spray/not spray when you drop off the truck. I am very pleased with the results so far. However there was a little overspray underneath the back window and some tape was left in some small areas. Just make sure you do a thorough walk through at the installers before driving off. each installer is different so you'll have some good inputs and bad, mine are good for the installer in my area. Take care and enjoy your Tundra with linex.
1. Leave the plastic factory bedcaps on. Do not apply LINE-X to the plastic caps or the rails underneath them.
2. It's your choice. But, we remove them, apply LINE-X and then replace them.
3. There is no benefit to wait until warmer weather. LINE-X is heated to about 130-140 degrees and your truck's bed is also slightly heated right before LINE-X is applied to it.
4. The dealer will take care of the tailgate access panel. The screws should be removed and then after masking the guts, the panel is slightly raised before spraying. After the LINE-X application (and unmasking), the panel is lowered onto the tailgate and the screws are reinstalled. So, if you have a tailgate latch problem, the panel can be removed without any modification to the bedliner.
5. The LINE-X produt provides a watertight seal. The dealer with prep as usual and just spray right over those scratches.
I'll be happy to help you and I'll also be happy to call your LINE-X dealer to make sure that he is doing everything correctly.
If you are not going to put a tonneau cover on your truck, I recommend LINE-X Xtra. Xtra is an optional product that resists fading and loss of gloss and contains a Kevlar micro pulp for extreme durability. Xtra is available in black or for color matches. LINE-X dealers must first become certified before they can sell Xtra, but I understand that about 70% of LINE-X dealers are now certified. You can learn more about Xtra here: Xtra
123Gone,
Still pissed that you guys or any X-tra installers aren't in Houston. From all the pic's I've seen of X-tra,
still makes me want to get the front bumper done in Red.
I'm gonna have to settle for powdercoating the chrome instead......

Well, perhaps you should re-think that powdercoating. Anything powdercoated is going to get chipped if it's on the front of the vehicle. And, powdercoating will tend to dull after a year or so. We see this sort of stuff every week.
TRUST ME,
I've been checking my schedule to see when I will "HAVE TO" go to our Dallas office for a meeting......If so, I'll choose to drive instead of fly so I can write off my mileage and gas........Instead of having to pay the extra $$$ for gas, in addition to the fee for your highly protective application....Thanks!
Saw that chipped pic in one of your earlier posts......That must have been a factory RanchHand bumper PC because their
application is very thin like you showed.
However, I had my previous front Super Duty PC'd locally in Red and it was MUCH thicker Tiger Drylac Poly, without any
penetrating chips over 110K miles in 4 1/2 yrs. Not really much noticable fade for it being Red(Worst), but yes maybe just a shade.
Just like sprayed liners, application and product applied make a TON of difference.

If people don't mind sharing what did you pay for your line-x/line-xtra liner? I just called a local Line-x dealer and they said 499 for the typical black liner and an xtra 250 for the line-xtra. If I go with just the typical black with line-xtra its an extra 169 as well. Those good prices or typical?

THANK YOU! You paid about $610 before tax which includes a $40 group buy/TS.com discount for your blue Xtra color match.
bigpapa, I think that might be a bit on the high side for your part of the country. Use the dealer search function at LINE-X Spray-On Truck Bedliners...the ultimate truck accessory! to find the closest dealers to you. Call some other dealers for price quotes.

Unfortunately the other dealers in the state are over an hour away and the dealer I did call was more then convenient for me. I work 70+ hours a week and they just happen to be on my way to where I go so it would work out well for me actually. I guess I might have to pay for convenience if I want the Line-x spray on.
On that note has anyone ever bought that bedliner that you can paint on yourself? I bought one for my father a few years back and I don't think he did it to his truck at the time so I can't ask him about it and I think he might have thrown it out....not sure why but I was also thinking about that for the bedliner. Anyone have experience with that at all?

Thank you to all! Especially 123Gone. I hope my installer does everything the right way, and doesn't short cut. Wish I lived closer to Fort Worth. I'm very interested in the Xtra color coded liner, but my truck is white, and all the pics of Xtra are darker colors, like blue, grey, and red (Salsa red looks awesome) so there's probably a reason that white isn't shown. Either it's not available, or it doesn't look very white, or stay very white. I guess I'll find out when I get to the local Line-X dealer. Probably black is in my future.
We typically discourage white because they tend to show dirt unless there's a tonneau cover over it. But, white Xtra is available and will not turn yellow.
White in the sides:
This pic is not from my shop, but it is a white LINE-X bedliner.
I really like the white! It seems much less conspicuous than a black liner on a white truck. It also seems that it may stay cooler (and subsequently the things in the bed cooler) than black. Unless its a total dirt magnet and is difficult to clean, I don't mind that it shows a little dirt. It is a truck after all, and the sides of the bed are so tall that you don't really look into the bed unless the tailgate is open.
I guess what it boils down to is: Is it especially difficult to clean? Does it stain? And is it as durable as the black? You already said it would not yellow, which would be my only other fear. Approx. how much should I expect to pay for white Line-X for my Crewmax? (Just so I don't get reamed)
Anyone out there with white Line-X that would like to comment? Would you do it again?
Thanks again.
