Default Rattle in the Dash

I just got my truck in mid November and have noticed that until the inside temperature is way beyond comfortable, the dash squeaks and rattles on the passenger side (near the windshield and the dash speaker). Has anyone had a similar problem? A start point would be greatly appreciated for my wild goose chase! It is a great truck, but the rattle drives me crazy!!!!

I have the same problem on mine also until the truck warms up. I am just thinking if the type of hard plastic Toyota use for the front console has anything to do with the problem. No rattles when the truck is warm and cozy though.

Yeah Had It But Fixed It Myself. Its The Heater Duct That Runs Just Under That Speaker In The Corner Front. I Just Took A Zip Tie And Went Around The Duct And The Dash Bar And Snuged It Up A Little. You Have To Take Both Glove Boxes Out. You Can Reach Up Uner Dash And Move That Duct And Make The Same Noise. It May Not Be The Correct Fix But It Helps

TSB NV009-06

Introduction:

If a creak, tick, or rattle noise is heard at the top or bottom of the windshield, the source
of the noise may be the two windshield stoppers bonded to the top of the windshield or
the windshield retainers bonded to the lower edge of the windshield. This bulletin
provides the recommended repair procedure to eliminate these types of noises from the
windshield area.

Hotcarl,

I was the original poster of the dash rattle fix that mxsjw linked you to. In my case the rattle was the two vents behind the glove box clanking together. Once I tightened them up by stuffing some felt in there the problem went away and it's still holding strong. You dont really have to take the radio out to get to it, but it helps to be able to see what youre looking for as opposed to trying to feel for it. You'll have more reaching room if you pop out the lower glove box too.

PM me if you have any questions I could possibly answer for you.

Mark

Thanks Mark! I haven't really looked at the two glove boxes yet, but I assume they will come out relatively easily. I really look forward to getting this rattle stopped; it is the causing of some serious road rage before I even get off my front street!!

I looked at your thread and I appreciate the time you took to post such a thorough fix.

Benjamin

Try the fix suggested a ways down in this post Rattle in dash -- reach up near the passenger speaker and find the lip where the dash meets the metal, stuff something in between -- this worked like a charm... wish I had known about this before I took out the gloveboxes and tried all the other "fixes" that were suggested. This one took me 30 seconds and works.

I did the same exact thing to my rattle dash by stuffing some foams up below the dash and windshield on the passenger side from underneath and that solved my problem also. No need to remove all the glove compartment, radio, etc.... I did not want to tear apart my whole dash just to fix this problem. I made an appointment to take it to the dealer and at the last moment canceled it and tried the foam technique and it worked like magic. It has been below zero here in MN in the last week and no more annoying dash rattles. I am a happy camper now! The truck feels a lot better without the rattles.

Also, bought some new Firestone Destination A/T tires to replace my crappy BF Goodrich stock tires and it rides a lot better and less scary now. These Firestone tires are a lot sticky on wet surfaces and gives me more confidence and a less mushy ride compare to the BF Goodrich tires. I love these new tires so far!

I have to say, I'm glad I found this place. I just got my Tundra today and I have the same rattle you guys are talking about (goes away when truck is warm) and now I know how to fix it before I have to kill someone. Thanks

One other point of potential rattle is the two map lights in the upper console (roof). Mine drove me nuts for about a month until I realized what was rattling. If you touch them, you will see that there is a lot of play in them. I wedged a small piece of felt between the plastic light cover and the console. Now I use the dash switch to turn them on rather than pushing on the light covers to activate them.
