This is a discussion thread titled "Chains???", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Driving from GA to CO for a Christmas vacation. Going to spend a few days doing some skiing. Think I'll need chains? Don't really want to buy them if I don't have to but don't want to be idiot without them either. Advise?

try and have a Merry Christmas and drive safe, i would include chains or straps just in case. Colorado is getting hit hard and Pueblo and Denvers lows were 7 degrees this AM and it could get better but Murphys Law can come into play!! Weather is a hit and miss thing and i would get very familiar with the route you plan on taking and alternate ones that ya might end up taking!! GL
As a Coloradan, I have not needed chains in the past 10 years as long as you have 4wd. You might slip and slide a little, but you won't need 'em if you stay on the main roads. And if we get sun, the roads will be dry. Sun at 6-10,000ft of elevation will melt anything, even with temps well below freezing. Typically we get a lot of sun. Enjoy.
I would say get chains...It's better to have them and not use them then to not have them. Also I believe it was Les Schwab that has a policy that allows you to buy chains and if you don't use them you can return them.

I'd buy them just to be safe and take them back and get your $$$$ back if unused. Just my .02.

If driving thru NM take notice that this state does not put a lotta effort into cleaning any roads to include I25 & I40. The whole state can come to a stop in a blink of an eye, they just can't keep roads clean because of the roads are isolated and too expensive to under take? Big rigs will be parked on Old Rt 66 which runs thru downtown in the middle of both side of road. all hotels full and just a big mess so they close the roads and no ne can go anywhere cause they do not plow them!! Raton Pass might plow but when it gets ruff out here everyone goes home! also if you are not used to driving in tuff conditions bring a bottle and a magazine and some warm clothes!!

As another new mexican, I have to agree with hogwild. NM closes 25 and 40 with regularity this time of year. I've gotten around it using backroads, but I drive a 4wd and I don't venture into the really treacherous stuff. If there's a winter storm coming through NM and you're planning travel here, you might want to plan on potential delays and closures.
Another great reason to have the 4x4. If driving a 2wd through Colorado I would have the chains, 4x4 wouldn't need them. After being in Colorado for 10 years the only time I have used chains was taking a trailer through 1 foot of mountain snow out to the west coast. Colorado weather usually changes pretty quickly, so if in doubt find a hotel for the night, it will probably be a whole different story by morning.
not looking forward to my drive tomorrow from montana to denver

Did you know Toyota says no chains on the front of the 07DC4X4 in their owners manual? I was sure surprised. After crawling underneath, I understand why. There is not enough clearance to allow chains without damaging the suspension/steering components.
