This is a discussion thread titled "First Long Trip in new Tundra", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Well, I just returned home from my first trip to the Dallas/ Ft Worth Metroplex in my new Tundra. Trip is about 610 miles each direction. I was able to test several scenarios... First, MPG... averaged 18.3 MPG going up empty. 18.1 coming back with about 600# of stuff. Truck had 1700 miles when I left home. Fuel gauge is about 6 gallons off. Second, I tried every possible way to detect an exhaust drone in my JBA's but happily, I never did. Third, and most important to me... No bed bounce. I understand that Bed Bounce is a function of many variables, and concrete highways with expansion joints is a key one. Surely I could not have replicated every potential situation... but I feel confident that I covered any of them that I may encounter. Don't know about California roads, but it's hard to imagine anything worse than Miss state 49 and Interstate 20 between Jackson and Dallas.
And.... as expected, this truck truly rides like a truck... but, exponentially better than the 05 Taco it replaced!!!

What speeds were you driving at and is your truck 4x4?

70-75 with an occasional 80. The North/ South strip between the Gulf Coast and Jackson (160 miles or so) is a little hilly and posted speed limit of 65 tops. So you can typically run about 70 ish. There is still quite a bit of stop & go on that stretch. (no cruise control use either)
When we left Ft. Worth yesterday morning it was 34 deg. When we arrived on the Coast is was 79.
Actually, I am Shickled Titless with the MPG's.....
Oh Yea... 2WD

Thanks for the info and down to earth gut experience. I am a new owner also and have similar feelings about this truck. I have the DC 2 wheel drive and love it. Have driven GM's all my life and flat enjoy driving this thing. I am a 52 year old young man with a Harley and 68 Firebird 4 speed that enjoys seat of the pants go. Both the Harley and the FB are a long ways from stock and will hold their own.
Thanks again.
I'm planning a trip to Nashville (12-14hrs each way). I want to take the Tundra, my friend wants to take her Prius. Yes, the prius will cost less to take, but this is supposed to be a vacation. We are supposed to have fun. The Tundra would make the travel a LOT more fun .......... We'll have to wait to see who wins this one .

I hear ya on I-49/I-20. I take the same route to Norman, OK from Laurel, MS. The Tundra is well-behaved -- 18.5 mpg both ways. I'll be making the next trip during X-Mas lowered 2/4 and will report on it's driveability.

good mpg NICE! but for bed hop its not going happen with 600lb in the bed. Only when the truck in empty. Thats the resown people complain about bed hop because they don't use the truck to haul stuff.
Hey all... I just returned from another trip to the DFW area. It's the second time the T has made this trip. Here are a couple of my observations. FYI: Trip Up, empty with about 600# in the cab... 187 max temp, avg speed 55, top speed 79, 18.3 mpg, trip time just under 11 hrs.
Trip back hauling the same 600# in cab with 6 X 12 heavy enclosed trailer loaded wall to wall: 195 max temp, avg speed 51, top speed 74, heavy winds all day, first 400 or so miles it was a head wind, then a cross wind, 13.8 mpg, trip time just under 12 hrs. The "T" is truly incredible. The Tow/Haul works great, merging and maneuvering traffic is never a problem. (Wish I had the Tow mirrors) And it is very comfortable. I have nearly 7600 miles and I average 17.3 mpg around home. I LOVE ME SOME TUNDRA!
