Thumbs down Toyota says no chains on 4x4

While preparing for my annual elk hunt into Colorado this past November, I was reading my owners manual (07DC4x4) trying to find Toyotas recommendation for chains and was surprised to read they say not to put chains on the front. There are occasions in the back country roads of Colorado when the cold freezes the water and snow on the road, no front chains will send you off the side of the mountain. I was a little irritated, needless to say, and crawled underneath, sure enough, there is barely an inch of clearance between the tires and the suspension/steering components. Fortunately, we did not get any bad weather. Next year I will have to get wheels with a bigger offset so I can use chains.

I havent put a set of chains on a vehicle in over 20 years...I can however tell you that with the stock tires and wheels...there isnt much room. Hell I put my tires on the stock rims and if I had 1/4" clearance...I had a foot. I was so relieved to put my new rims on the truck.
