TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Fuel Economy", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Keep your foot off the go pedal. Jokes aside I had my first road trip last weekend and wanted to get a good estimate. Fayetteville, NC to Macon, GA. Bout 380 miles. Kepts it pegged at 80 the whole way except for in columbia and agusta. It averaged 15.4 for the trip. On the way back I kept it locked at 65 the entire trip. Pegged out 19.0 mpg. Just broke the 1000 mile mark and I am guessing that it will improve as it wears in. I know this is off your topic but I wanted to say that I was pretty impressed on the ride and the power of the motor. I think that it dropped down to fifth mabey two or three times on the interstate. In my 04 tacoma V-6 she would pop down a gear on what it seemed like any grade. Plus she would only get about 15.1 mpg at 80. I would have to fill up at the 260 mile mark. All in all I am pretty impressed with fuel economy. Damn, I don't think I helped at all with your question did I.
Going over 65mph REALL hurts your MPG. Any combination of CAI/headers/exhaust should help in both performance and MPG. The TRD has a better fit and customer service, but from what I've read on this forum, the Voland will perform and sound a tiny bit better. There have, however been some complaints about Volant's fit and customer service. There are a lot of threads on this forum that can help you decide which you want on your truck.

I think I am getting the worst gas mileage ever posted on this thread for the entire tank. I'm at like 160 miles with the gas light on. Go me. I MIGHT be able to string it to about 180 or 190 before I fill up but I'm leaving on Saturday so I'll know by Friday night.

My Son gets around 14.5 with my truck. I get around 17. How old did you say you were ??? Just bustin' your stones. Different trucks get different MPGs and different driving styles yeild different MPG. My advise - drive it and enjoy it (which I'm sure you do).

In the summer months I could get 18+ all city driving and 18-20 all freeway driving. It appears to have fallin off a couple with the winter fuel and the colder temps. Its nice to get good mpg but I would be happy no matter what it got. Its all about the power, if you know what I mean.

Haha, I'm 18. It doesn't help that there are so many attractive ladies down here though . The biggest reason is my 50 lb lead food. That seems to hurt my mileage a lot, and my bits and pieces enjoy a tug from that "string" occasionally haha. No pun intended
I'm looking to get some better mileage on the return trip home though. I'll be able to get a full tank of gas in on the highway that is unloaded, mostly. On the way down here, I managed to get somewhere north of 15 on the highway with a lot of stuff in the bed that was very unaerodynamic and with a bunch of clothing and my dog in the cab. I managed all this while doing 70, 80, 90, and even 100 (had to keep up with that yellow 'Vette and the red Mustang GT that passed me ) .
I'll be monitoring my gas mileage on the way home, that's for sure.
Also, how much weight should I put in the back for safe tracking? I'm sure I'll hit some pieces of that midwest storm and want to keep 'er stable, VSC or not. Nobody down here sells tubes of sand, so I might just go by a few 50 lb bags of the "play sand" in the plastic wrappers.
I just picked up a tent that weight about 150lbs and it made a BIG difference in my ride and handling (for the better). From what I've been hearing, that's about the weight you want. Iv you do need the VSC, I think you will be impressed with how well it works.

Sounds good. 3 bags of sand comin' right up. I'm looking to supplement the VSC. If I can add the traction myself, I will. I don't like to rely TOO much on those systems, even though they're nice and work very well. I'd rather avoid using them if at all possible.
