TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "What's the deal.....", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I love my RCSB and think it is so bad a$$ but what the hell is the deal with the clunking in the rear end when turning into a driveway apron or crossing anything that makes the rear end articulate? It's not the spare and all the bolts seam tight. It sounds as if the axle is to short and it's slappin' around in there. It's fine when you hit bumps straight on though. I'm puzzled....
Actually you don't have to turn sharp at all, i can be driving straight and cross a slight drainage culvert that is crossing a street or parking lot at an angle and if one wheel drops in first causing an articulation of the axle then a get a CLUNK. I crossed one this morning and it sounded like the rear end is coming loose. By the way I have the same truck as yours minus the cool mods. this is really the only thing that peeves me about the truck, other than that this thing is awesome!
I will have to pay more attention to that. I would think I would have heard something like that. I will listen today when I go to lunch. Maybe some others will chime in to help you.
I'll probably have to do that after I return from vacation. What I fear is the dreaded "That's normal" response. If they tell me that I'm going to ask to test drive every truck on that lot to see if "that's normal".

is yours a 4x4? on a side note....... I wish everyone on this board would take the time to make a signature, that way some questions would get eliminated,

Never argue with an idiot. They will bring you down to their level and beat you with experience!
I had a loud clunking noise coming from underneath the bed of my Crewmax 4x4 TRD. At first, the noise would appear under fairly heavy braking and turning (like making a turn off of a 45 MPH road onto a residential street). After a while, the noise worsened and would bind/unbind under hard braking/accelerating.
A friend and I crawled under the truck and checked the spare tire and tightened body and bed bolts. My friend is a mechanic and said it is not uncommon for loose frame bolts to cause clunking issues. Through trial and error, we found that the problem was a loose bolt that the connects the cab to the frame. The bolt was under the left rear of the cab (in the back seat, behind the driver). The bolt was not noticeably loose, but it was loose enough for the cab to slide forward slightly and bind under heavy braking. After the stop, It would unbind (and make another clunking sound) when accelerating.
Once the bolt was tightened the clunking disappeared. I have driven the truck for the last 4 months with no more clunks under the bed.
Haven't noticed anything like what you describe on my RCSB and I go over some pretty rough/rutted roads.
Let us know what you find out....

probably your tailgate banging. Stand at the rear of the truck and lift up on the tailgate on the right hand side at the bottom while the tailgate is closed and let it go. There is a-lot of slack where it pivots and it will make a banging sound when you hit a chug hole or on a rough road. Hope this helps.
The only clunk I've ever heard was while coasting on the freeway under very light throttle. I only heard it twice so far on the same trip, but never again after that.
