TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "completed drive shaft recall", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Thanks to a board member, I learned of the pending recall for the propeller shafts on the tundra. Letter notification will be out the 1st of the year.
I leave for San Diego on the 28th of december, so you can imagine this caused me a bit of alarm. I called the 800# provided by a member, and the rep advised me that my truck bought in Feb was one of the 15,000 that needed to be checked. I called my local dealer and advised them of my situation...The next day I had an appointment.
The recall issue is that 7% of the 15,000 vehicles may have a drive shaft that is not hardened correctly. To test this, toyota has a punch with a tip that determines if the steel on the shaft is correct. In my case, mine was correct so I am good to go.
If I would have "failed" the test, they would have had to order a new shaft and install it.
The whole process took about 50 minutes, and was handled completely to my satisfaction..
If you get a letter, just take it in. Not a big issue.
Thanks again to the board members who posted the notice.

I also want to thank those that brought this recall to our attention. It's nice to know what is going on before you get a letter. One of the many advantages of being on this site. I called the 800 number. My truck is not includled in the recall.
I called the 800 number and mines not involved. Im glad too cuz I would have destroyed it by now !!

Do you happen to have a VIN number range of the vehicles in question? All I know is the production date range of July '06 to Aug '07 (not exact)

See if this helps you guys so you don't have to call. This is the complete letter that we get from Toyota on what procedures to perform. It also has the VIN range in it.

That is exactly what it is. The punch is used to determine how hard the temper is based on how deep of an imprint the punch makes.
Some of your better quality knives and tools will have these tiny little divots in the steel where testing has been done.
Well maybe, If it doesn't have this does not mean it is low quality. Many times they don't test every piece, rather a sample of each lot would be tested to substantiate hardness. Also, often it is done on areas that don't show or are considered "non-functional", i.e. the face of an aircraft ball bearing.

Thanks for the good information. There were only 99 in LA so hopefully I wont be one of them. Im to lazy to call the 800 number, lol.
Looks like I am in, not going to worry about it until the letter shows. I have put a hard 21,000 on the truck already lots of towing etc. I would think mine is OK, but you never know.
