Default A possible new Tundra owner!

Hello Everyone!

I am new to this thread and I have never owned a Tundra before. I am in the market to buy a new truck very soon. I have always owned a Chevy product. I looked at the 08 Tundra Crew Max Limited today and was very satisfied with what I saw. Can anyone help me out with what you like about the Tundra if you have owned a Chevy before. Like what is the major differences and selling points. I don't like dealing with the dealers and what they have to say. They just want me to but something. Also I am interested to hear any good tips or tricks on getting good deals from the dealers. Seems like the dealers don't want to work beyond the rebated price on the Toyotas. My ears are open to any suggestions and opinions!! Thanks for helping.

Mark

Hey Dialtone,

I'm a brand new tundra owner, and I drove 350 miles down from the Cincinnati area to pick up my Tundra at Jim Barkley. It was a completely painless deal. I heard about them from this sight... Jim Barkley Toyota in Asheville NC, offering new and used Toyotas, 2007 Toyota Camry, Camry Hybrid, yaris, FJ Cruiser, and Tundra Jim Barkley Toyota sells Toyota Cars, Trucks, SUVs, and Hybrid vehicles

I came from a '99 Chevy S10 ZR2 which while a chevy was a lot different animal. I've also only had my Tundra since Saturday so I haven't had a whole lot of time with it....

But I can tell you I got a better deal down in NC than I could get up here, and I even got the Navigation system with an SR5 which is apparently not possible around here.

I am a first time Toyota owner myself and have been very happy with the Tundra so far. As far as pricing goes, if you are a Costco member you can use their buying service which will usually get you a quote around $500 over invoice before rebates. I took that quote and e-mailed it to a couple of other dealers asking if they wanted to give a competitive bid. One e-mailed me back with the truck I wanted at invoice. Not bad for 5 minutes of work.

Thank you everyone for your input. What I liked adout the Tundra CM Limited was the rear seats. I go on ATV trips and most of the time there are 4 bigs guys in the truck and I need all the room I can get. My 00 Silverado ext cab is not comfortable at all. I don't think the 08 Silverado Crew will be much better. The Tundra is the answer to that. The interior is lacking but I think it will grow on me. I have not drove it yet but I don't think I will be disappointed. I am finding it hard to get the fully loaded limited with nav and dvd with sunroof. It seems no dealer really has those in stock. O well I'll go aftermarket.

Thanks agian!

First off, hi Mark. Welcome to the group.

My last 2 chevys were total junk. My most recent 03 Silverado crew cab HD 2500 long bed was sucking every last penny out of me with random little things. Way too many to list but the quick breakdown is new trans., new rear end, new water pump, new ac (twice), steering column replaced 5 times from bad bearings, piston slap beyond description, rattles EVERYWHERE, power mirrors didnt work and the last straw was the a/c condenser in the dash went bad to the tune of $1200. Most of that list was under warranty (which is the saddest part), but the fact that the truck was at the dealer every month was just unacceptable.

I have 14k miles on the Tundra and besides the small dash rattle which I have since fixed, the truck has been bullet proof. I tow about 6k lbs. daily and dont have one complaint with this truck.

Good luck, I'm sure youre gonna love it.

#1....Deal with the dealer on-line though email. Make them give you a hard quote for the options you want. Work back and forth through email and seal the deal that way. That is what I did and I got $600 over invoice with a bunch of extra options I didn't have to pay for. After that, you just go in and pick up the truck. If they don't deal through email then move to the next one. It's 2007 not 1960, so the old-school sales methods are gone for good!!!!

#2 Test drive the Crewmax and compare to the Chevy

#3 The interior on the Crewmax is not quite as good as the Chevy but it is very close.

#4 Good luck

Test entry into the Tundra many times, also test exit. You are used to a lower seat and a greater clearance for your head as you enter the vehicle. Probably wouldnt bother a young man, anyone with back trouble might experience difficulty stepping up into a truck while ducking your head at the same time. Once you are in there its great.

LOL, and the best part was when I was looking at that truck on the lot the salesman told me that Chevy has come a long way and the trucks are more dependable and last alot longer now than they ever did before. Its funny because I heard the same line of crap on the first Chevy I bought in 95. The engine on that truck threw a rod in my driveway at 70k miles. I had been brain washed to think that things like that and what happened with my 2500 were just normal maintenance for truck owners, until I started talking with people who owned Hondas and Toyotas and drove them for 150k miles and more and only needed new tires.

Its funny. I'll bet if we sat down we could talk for hours and compare notes. Sounds like we both had the same crappy truck. Its not a very good sign when the service department at the dealer all know you by name. I'm with you, I'll never own another GM product.

You hit the nail right on the head here.

I let my dad experience all that BS with GM. Seemed like every new one he got, the dealership told him...........this is soooooooooooo much better than the one you had. And then, the same old BS mechanical failures happened with that one. So, he'd go trade it in on another one. DUH!!!!! Mcfly!!

Well, he just came over from that BS GM dark side and now is in an 08 Tundra DC with the 5.7.
He couldn't be happier. He told me the other day...." You know what son, this is thee hottest vehicle i have ever owned, period."

He's lovin it.

haha, I heard that every time I took it in for something. Apparently the people who designed the 6.0 liter intended for it to sound like a diesel semi, so I was always told that was normal. And just like you said, it was either normal or they couldnt duplicate the problem.

Brakes needed replaced and rotors turned about every 15k miles. The paint had cracks and chips everywhere even in places they shouldnt have.

Alright, I have to stop........ I feel my blood pressure rising.
