TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Tailgate update on mine.", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
After reading the posts about the tailgate I got pretty scared since I too load atvs in the back of my truck. I went out and looked at mine and thankfully no cracks. I have had my truck about a year and have loaded my quad several times now. My quads are sport quads(350lbs) which are a lot lighter then the 700lb quads that I have read about on here that people were loading in the back of there tundra. Maybe thats why mines not cracked, who knows, but I did look it over really good and it looks nothing like what iv'e seen on here.

Same here, I load my 700R into my bed all the time and nothing wrong with it. I also have had my 260lb brother drive it into the bed up the ramps, when it was full of gas.. (close to 600lb total).. still no issues.

I dont think the slight difference in ATV weight is the reason. Its just luck or only certain groups were affected. Mine never had an ATV on it and it is cracked. I am starting to think it came that way as there is a DC on the local lot with a cracked gate. How abused can that one be?

There is a big difference in weight on a sport quad and a utiity quad. Most sport quads are around 350lbs and most big bore utiity quads are over 700lbs loaded down. Thats twice as much, then add the weight of a rider and thats close to 1000lbs when riding up the ramp. I'm not saying theres not something wrong with the tailgate design, it should hold that much weight. I'm just saying thats maybe why mine is ok and some others too.
Yea i will agree with the previous poster here and say that mine too is cracked and the only thing on it has been me at 160lbs...or my dog which is right around 50 lbs. Just hairline fractures in the weld that split a lil but if i climb in the bed and step off the end of the tailgate it does creak a lil like its sperating more.....oh well if it busts apart then they will have to fix it...not worried to much bout it until it does happen i enjoy my truck so much otherwise!!!
The tailgates that are cracked have probably been that way from the dealer lot. I think people are paranoid of having cracked the tailgate themselves under various amounts of use and didn't spot it initially when they bought the truck, only discovering the cracks when others here on TS have pointed the problem out.
I've had several hundred pounds on mine numerous times and so far it's been solid. I think toyota has a problem with the spot welds on these tailgates. Combined with the lack of structural reinforcement, the welds would be under a great amount of stress when the tailgate is loaded down. It could be literally just the stress of slamming the tailgate shut that causes the cracks to first appear. That theory would at least explain why they're like that on the sales lot. I took a walk around a local toyota dealer and looked at several tundra tailgates - 1 out of the 7 I looked at had a cracked tailgate.

My point was/is this-the difference isnt causing it. Lok at how many are cracked w/o ever loading an ATV (like mine). I have seen them on the lot with cracks, so the loading just magnifies the faulty gates IMO.

Cracks should not be there from the factory. Nothing could cause the cracks. So it is a defect that is going to get worse. You are right, loading will cause more damage.

From all reports I have seen and looking at my Tundra tailgate there are not any spotwelds on the tailgate. Some type adhesive on the seams. Hopefully Toyota will redesign and replace these poorly designed units.
