TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Anyone tried this?", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Before you bought your Tundra, did you go onto Toyota's website and try to "build" your truck with your desired options and option packages? Were you frustrated at the lack of certain combinations, eg Leather in SR5, or Tow Mirrors in Ltd, or V-6 engine in double cab, etc., etc.,
Just out of interest, I gave the website a different zip code and was astonished to see a whole different set of option packages, engine / body / drivetrain styles, and pricing structures. Some things will be listed as factory installs which are actually dealer installs, and other combinations will be unavailable even though they may be somewhere else in the country.
A few Zip codes I tried were 55605 (Northern MN, the nearest to where I live in Canada), 32601 (Gainesville, Northern Florida) 78786 (Austin TX) and a few others which I forget now. Oh yeah, one for Massachusetts as well.
Why does Toyota do this?

There are two major distributors of Toyota in the US. Gulf States Toyota (GST) which covers Louisianna, Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Mississippi. The other is Southern States Toyota which covers Tennessee, the Carolinas, Georgia, Florida, and Alabama. These distributorships dictate to Toyota the packages for vehicles. The rest of the country is free of these price jacking monopolies and the Toyota website accurately reflects the standard and optional equipment available on vehicles.
This is what was explained to me by my Toyota dealer. So when a vehicle is purchased in one of these distributor regions, it has gone through the regional facility for additional equipment and markup. If you buy a Toyota outside of the region you can save several thousand dollars and get a vehicle exactly the way you want it. Ie. no Texas Edition.

That explains it then. Maybe it also explains why there is shoddy wiring noted in some trucks: the work was done at one of the regional facilities, and not up to factory standards. If it was me, I'd go to one of the northern or western states and bypass these bloodsucking vampires, just like I went to the US and bypassed Toyota Canada which seems to do the exact same thing while increasing your price anywhere from 25-50%!
