Local Tire shop can't mount 18" tires on Tundra Rims.

Now I'm driving around with 4 nice new BFG A/T KO's in the back of my truck, where they won't do me any damn good, except maybe as extra weight. And I waited like 2 weeks to get the tires picked out, ordered, delivered, bring my truck to the shop to have the work done. .

Actually there are 4 or 5 local tire dealers, and all of them can't mount my tires on my wheels. Even the shop that can mount big rig tires can't do this, I don't understand why, something about the alloy wheels or some such. So now I have to drive into the "big city" and have it done.

Anyone else have this problem? 'Cause misery loves company. . .

They need to have a tire mounting machine that is able to accomodate alloy wheels. If not the machine could carve chunks out of the wheel.

Yep. The previous poster is correct.. needs to have the correct mounting machine. Don't forget that our trucks use TPMS sensors on the tires, so make sure those don't get damaged during mounting!

Why didn't you buy the tires from a dealer who could install? Sounds like you were trying to save a few bucks. Which is fine but don't whine about it.

Lol, that will get you a note from the mods, trust me, been there, done that.

The original poster just needs to find himself a reputable tire dealer. A decent tire shop should have no problem changing tires on an 18" rim. Just be sure to remind them about the tire sensor because if they don't know what they are doing, they will snap off the stem and then you will have to fight with them about replacing it.

In fact I was feeling a bit guilty about going out of the county and all with buying my truck. Not extra guilty, but I'm thinking that instead of going to the tire rack and buying the tires for $230 a piece (and the hassle of going to pick them up at the border and all that) I'll spend my money locally.
So I went to the local tire shop and ordered the BFGs. I guess he hasn't installed 18" tires, but with these 18s and 20 around he's looking to buy a new machine. He's a good guy and I've had stuff done there before; he knows about TMPS, so even though I wasn't SAVING $ I was actually paying like about $150.00 more it was making me feel Christmas-y. Well you know the rest, now I have the inconvenience of going to the big city for tire change-out that I thought I could avoid, at least one benefit of shopping locally.

Anyway, I wasn't being cheap. But sometimes trying to support your local economy backfires

I'm not sure that Canadian Tundras have those goofy TPMS sensors. But it is easy for a hamfisted tire guy tio ruin an alloy wheel anyway.

All 2007 - 08 Tundras sold in Canada have TPMS sensors.

You're actually in more of a bind then you realize, or at least have mentioned here on TS...What happens when you get a flat and need it fixed???? If you're only going to be able to get these fixed in the "big city" which I presume is a couple hours away, and if none of your local tire shops are planning on being able to accomodate you in the next few months, then you might as well go ahead and order a whole extra set of rims/tires for spares, or at least a couple extras.

I live in a town or 5,000 with no larger town for 200 miles in any direction. I suppose I better go inquire myself. I hope they're properly equipped.
