This is a discussion thread titled "tail lights blackening", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Hey, heard mention of this in a thread or two, but no one seems to have done it yet, can the tail lights be blackened like the headlights? if so let me know if anyone has done it i was planning to if anyone had any insights?
i have a friend who did his with some kind of spray paint made for that. he just taped off the part he didnt want tinted, and to me it looks pretty sharp. anyone think blacked out tail lights would look good on a silver truck? i plan on blackening just the red part, and leaving the rest as is.
do you plan on doing the whole combo, or just part of it? what color is your truck?
The spray is one method, but they also sell a tinted Mylar plastic that will stick on and conform to the shape of the tail lens. The spray tends to be permanent.
Personally all those I have seen done either way , it really cuts back light output. I wouldn't use it.
Although, the total Black Out wow factor is there if that is more important.
I just bought a set of Smoked Altezzas and that works out nice for me. They are just lightly smoked plastic lenses and light output is more acceptable.

LT
yeah, i think the spray is pretty much there for good, but my friend said when he wanted to redo it over, all he did was sand it off CAREFULLY. so who knows...
and yeah, i know it would cut back on output...i dont want to get them too dark. being that my tundra is silver, the tint would be MUCH easier to notice...or at least i think that would be the case lol
I'm planning on doing this to my taillights, but I'm not applying anything Black to the clear or red lenses because of the reduced light output.
Instead I'm going to open up the housing and paint all the silver surfaces inside like most people do for the headlights. This will prevent me from losing any brightness from the reverse or brake lights.

I think that is what he was talking about in the first place.
Get ready to get pulled over....most likely. I've done it before on past trucks, most of my trucks were black and it does look really good. But PoPo will nab ya if they are in one of those moods. I've done it two ways, one was with spray window tint and the other was by mixing clear with 5 percent black then spraying in layers until I got the desired darkness.
If my truck were silver, I'd mix silver pearl and 5 percent or less black with clear and then carefully spray one layer at a time. The silver pearl will accent the truck color and you'll get a mild darkening of the lens from the dab of black in the clear. I'd mask off the circular area of where the light emits directly aft to insure you don't jack with the brightness.
Yeah,
But I was going off what BlkTaco4Now and LifeTech were referring to in their posts. They were talking about tinting the lens.
Demo8BX68,
Post pic's when you've completed this. I'm hoping it looks good!

I don't know about painting the insides...think it might look like a Durango/school bus with the two large circles left chrome. But only one way to find out!

that just gave me an idea...
Depending on what kind of tail lights you have, it may be difficult...i know that on the tacomas it was much easier to do the headlights than the tails... but the look you are referring to...is it this?
that seems to be it, would like that look does it look like the lenses are smoked or just the inside like i was planning?

The red Tundra listed above looks to have the light smoke film similar to mine over the entire taillight lens. Mine are similar to stock when lit despite my all over VERY DARK smoke tint.
Shameless excuse to post more pictures, I know but I enjoy looking at this dark RCSB:

i really wanna say it looks like the inside is done...
The tail lamps are lit though so it might throw you off a bit. I still think mine looks similar but overall darker with the break lights activated.
BTW. The pictures I listed don't appear like they do in real life in my opinion. I'll get a nice evening or overcast day and take some more so you can see how "not overkill" my smokes lenses are.
