TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Transmission Fluid Leak", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Truck is an '07 Tundra 5.7L 2WD TRD. Appears to be a fluid leak from the seal housing that's attached to the U-joint. Fluid is leaking from the seal, onto the U-joint, where its getting flung all over the underside of the truck causing several drip locations on the floor beneath.
I've searched the forum and see its nothing new to earlier Tundras, but I didn't see anything for the new '07 design. Obviously its still an issue. Any TSBs for this leak on the '07? How big of a deal is it for a dealer repair...can it be done in a day?
Finally got it in to the dealer today. After 5 hours they called and said "yep, needs a new seal." Part ordered, be here Thursday. Dealer told me its a big job, have to drop the entire drive shaft and open the tranny, but should be no more than a day.
I also had the same problem. The seal was replaced and it started leaking again. After second trip, the rear yoke and drive shaft were replaced, it has not leaked since. Was at dealer for 3 days, had to order parts.

Sounds like your dealer stepped up and did ya rite, did ya get a loaner? second trip should have been covered with loaner. not too hard to find decent dealer, easy to find PITA dealer. Good for you and hope the leak stays away!!
Same problem. Truck sat for 10 days, pulled out of garage and found about 2oz of red transmission fluid on the garage floor (same leak as sailfish described at the seal housing) Looked underneath and sure enough oil was slung underneath. The truck was due for an oil change anyway, took it to the dealer for oil change and trans leak last Friday. Picked the truck up that afternoon, dealer said there was no transmission leaks. Truck sat over the weekend, pulled out of the garage on Monday, now have about half quart of engine oil on the floor dripping from the black filter element cover AND transmission oil about the size of a quarter. Called dealer, they apologize and said to bring truck in on Monday to repair oil leak and I tell them you still need to fix the transmission leak. Dealer calls and says truck is ready, no transmission leak. I tell them to put the truck back on the lift and I'll be there in 20 minutes. The truck is on the lift with the service manager, shop foreman and tech and I go to show them the underbody, you would not believe they had wiped the entire underneath by the rear transmission seal housing and drive shaft. I asked why did you wipe it clean without fixing it, he said it was engine oil from the bad oring on the oil filter not transmission fluid. I said no, it is transmission fluid. So I took a shop rag wiped the back side of the shielding (between the shield and underbody) which was still covered with red transmission fluid. After they all sniffed and looked at it, the service manager said I think there's TSB on it. So, he told me they would order the parts and give me a call when they come in. I'll keep you guys posted. (The truck only has 9,100 miles)

If it's the same issue the TSB deals with (probably is), it's NOT the transmission output shaft seal leaking, but like most all driveshafts, the yoke has a "freeze plug" type plug at the rear end of the yoke next to the U-joint to seal off what little trans fluid works it's way up the yoke/output shaft splines. According to the TSB, they've had a number of the plugs not seated fully causing the trans fluid leak. The dealer will order either the yoke or forward driveshaft section, whichever Toyota sends our for the fix. Replacement should take a couple hours+-.

As a follow up Dealer replace drive shaft under TSB. Dropped off in the morning it was ready in the afternoon. Dealer was very apologetic and made this very convenient with a loaner truck.
