This is a discussion thread titled "skid plate destroyed", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Just wondering if any buddy has damaged there skid plate? I'm stationed in upstate new york at fort drum (the coldest palce in the world). Anyway I was back in the woods were we usually 4 wheel and the only way out was through an enormouus puddle. Which was frozen probly 4 to 6 inches in some spots like I said big puddle so like a dummy I drove through it. Sure enough I had my truck on a lift and I smashed up the skid plate pretty good. So were to go from here are there better skid plates out there? the factory one is kinda flimsy I think? thanks
My experince is that factory skid plates seem to offer less protection and are less sturdy than aftermarket ones. I don't think there are any available yet but a competent machine shop should be able to fab up a custom one relatively easily.
1st off it was -48F here last week, (without windchill) so I don't think it gets that cold in new york, secondly I banged up my skid plate pretty bad too, I removed it and bent it back as much as I could back to normal and all is good. I'm gonna get a after market one soon.
My dealer sells them. They are massive compared to the ones that come with the truck. Check your dealer id you can't find them. I'm pretty sure I've seen them on ebay and other places though.

Well I was kidding about coldest in the world but it stays around the negatives without windchill and it's definitly the coldest place I've been thanks I think I'm gonna check out this skidro thing thanks

If it did its job and became sacrificial for the vitals underneath the engine block, just replace it with a factory plate. It has to come off when you change the oil, which is a hassle for the DIY weekend warrior. I couldn't imagine having to line up and re-install that plate if it weighed 5-10lbs more than it already does.
It dipped down to 71 last night in my region and were expecting another cold one tonight.
I smashed mine also in the summer. Did it's job. Just gonna leave it for now. It did fold easier then the stock on on my '02 though. Maybe I just hit it harder.
Yep, dented mine so bad I needed to cut it to get to the bolts so I could change my oil. I replaced it with the factory one but it is pricey, I think they charged $250 for the new one.
There is a factory accessory skidplate available through the dealer. It's big and it's silver. It has different mount points than the regular skidplate so it will likely take real abuse better.
I think I'm gonna save my money and try not to abuse for now until skidrow makes one cause I'd rather give them a couple hundred for an *** kickin skid plate instead of that factory jive thanks for all the help
