Default 2wd to 4wd conversion?

Here's a newbie question for you guys. Do any of you know what would be involved in converting my 2wd '07 to 4wd? I'm sure it's "possible", but what all would be involved & would it be worth it $$$ wise, as opposed to selling it & picking up a 4wd from the factory? I have recently found myself in several situations where 4wd would have been preferable. Here's one >
I went to make a u-turn in my uncle's front yard , while on a cross country trip last month. I quickly became stuck in the soft grass. I couldn't bring myself to photograph the stock Chevy Silverado 4x4 that pulled me out. btw, that tow-dolly was disconnected to lighten the drag and it still couldn't get out. Not much of an incline either.

It would cost too much to convert to 4wd.

Instead of investing all that money to convert just get you a good set of Toyo M/T's. If you ever think you may get stuck make sure you turn all those traction nannies.

I too have a 2wd DC and i am going with a Toytec 3" lift, Black KMC 20's and some 35 12.50 R20 Toyo M/T's. I thought long and hard at the dealership about 2wd of 4wd and i just could justify me spending the extra money on something i know i would ever use. The only off-roading i do is on the beach during the summer time. Last summer my tundra almost got stuck at Crystal beach. Believe me, those BFG rugged terrain tires arnt very functional IMO. I know I know. Why lift a 2wd truck? I am doing this because i know it will help me out at the beach and plus its gonna look SWEET too

yeah, I figured it would probably not be cost effective, but thought I'd ask anyway. I'm looking to sell my DC standard bed 4x2 and get a DC longbed 4x4.

Sell the 4X2 and buy a 4X4. Then it would look sweet lifted

Yes, sell the 4x2 and get 4x4, you will NEVER HAVE to worry about the dilemma you found yourself in with that 4x2 ever again. Note: Get GOOD 4x4'ing tires for the 4x4 you'll buy. Do a look around in this forum and you will see plenty of threads on this topic alone.

Sanosuke!

It's actually a really easy process, just take your 2WD down to the dealership and trade it for a 4WD. There's not other reaslistic wat to do it. A conversion would cost you several fold more then just trading it in, and now matter how well it was done, it's still have problems that would never ever be solved. Anyone would be a damn fool to try and do a conversion.

Way cheaper than trading in, try better tires. Even a 4x4 with low traction tires is not going to perform well. You could also install a winch and still be way ahead on the $$.

If you decide to go ahead and get a 4x4 make sure to transfer your mods to the new truck. The dealer won't give you squat for any accessories.

I had Nitto Mud Grapplers on my 4x2. Let's just say it was a COMPLETELY different truck afterwards!

Or, if you foresee yourself in similar situations on a frequent basis, then just buy a 4WD truck. Toyota wants ~$300 for a freakin' glovebox door, and these trucks haven't been out long enough to find junkyard parts.

Your cheapest option is trying new tires. But if you really want the 4WD, just trade it up. Unless you can find the 4x4ECM, front driveshaft and all the compenents for less than what you'll take on a loss for trade-in.

Im really confused here. If you got stuck on that in 2wd with weight in the bed something is not right. You realized you will get hammered on a trade in? Get some good A/T or M/T tires and make sure you are familiar with the operation of TRAC ,ALSD, and VSC. The right combination should of got you out of that. (Unless it was really muddy!)
