TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Gas Mileage increases", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
The info that I am looking for is what have people added to their Tundra's to improve the MPG. Specifically interested in K&N air filters, nitrogen in tires, tonneau covers, dual exhaust, etc. Please estimate the cost of the addition and the before and after MPG.

Addons:
(LineX Bed Liner, Bed Rails, Aries 4" Deluxe Oval Step Bars, Tinted front windows - 35%, Prodige Brake Contoller, BakFlip, K&N Drop In, Tailgate Auto lock/unlock)
Down the road:
Custom console organizer, Console LED Light, Custom Rear Bed step, Back Up Camera, Fog Lights (updated 9/17/08)
Tonneau covers will provide only minimal improvement on mpg, if any at all. Very old subject discussed many, many times, so I don't want to start anything here, I just believe a tonneau cover should be purchased for their looks and use, not for improving gas mileage.
I did however, increase my mileage considerably by removing all those stink'en decals and badges, slip through the air nice and smooth now.

Many magazines and experts have researched mpg and tonneau or tail gate up/down and most say it makes no difference in gas mileage. all of the other add ons (cai, cat back, headers) can help a little when towing or driving fast. the best increase in gas mileage is to DRIVE EASY AND NOT OVER 60 MPH !

Dual cat backs (~$500)
TRD CAI (~$400)
MPG before, 15.1 average mixed driving.
MPG after, 16.6 average mixed driving.
I'm not sure but I would think most of the credit for MPG improvement was really do to mileage. I just now reached 4500. Don't want to say "Break In" but you know.
I also suspect that one of the improvement detractors is "Hey... Y'all listen to this !!!"

I installed a K&N drop-in filter and my mileage increased about 1.5 mpg. I average 18.8 mpg between fill-ups using 87 Octane. Everything else is stock..run 38psi in all tires.

What sort of driving do you do? If it's a lot of short trips then synthetic oil in everything (tranny, engine, differential, etc) will make a difference.

Any difference in sound with a "drop in?"

The break-in's reduction of frictional losses combined with my (slightly) diminished fascination with the 5.7's punch have allowed me to realize improved hwy mpgs.
I will be switching to 5w-20 on the next oil change and will be interested to see if it has any negative effect.
