TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Bug Guard ,,No more Weathertech ?", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Does anyone use a bug gaurd / rock guard on the the tundra a couple of friends have them on there 07 's andlove them i went to order one for my 08 and weathertech have stopped making them they told me on the phone they were haveto many complaints on instalation ....( Which i thought was normal because it go between the hood and grill,Yess grill has to be removed for install but at least its impossible to come loose or even fly off ) now i need to find another one......
I have the Weathertech protector. It's great when installed. Taking off the grill was the easy part. I had a heck of a time with the two underside clips. That should be a easy fix on there part. You can get a protector from Toyota. I don't like Toyotas because it stops at the hood and does not protect the outside corners. Go figure.
I've looked around too, and it appears no one really makes a easy to install guard, that also has no issues after some miles on the road. I'm sure over time more will come out. I was reading a Tundra review where the model tested came with the optional bug guard. They had issues with it coming loose and rubbing on the hood paint, not something good if you ask me.

Check with J.C.Whitney for a Lund bug guard. I installed the Lund on my 07 Tundra. Fit is good and seems to install like the Weathertech. Must remove or at least loosen the grill to install. No real problem there. I did install a strip of thin weather strip between the bug guard and paint on Tundra hood.

I have the AVS and does installs the same way as the weathertech. No problems with it. Works great. Seen AVS in snow and when it was snowing the snow wouldn't even hit the windshield while driving. Good luck.
I sell the Lund/AVS bug guard at a reasonable price. I also have it installed and I have sold many of them on this site with no complaints on how they hold up.
The install is straight forward. Now that I know how to do it...I can install them in 10 mins.

Does it go between the hood and grille or a stick -on ... ( it seems that the ones that are harder to install on these trucks are the ones that hold -up and wont come off easily ).. ?
I'm sure that Toyota still makes theirs. It's slightly more expensive than most quotes I've seen...I have it on my 07. But even if they haven't started making them for the 08, I'm sure you can just order one for an 07 since they're the same...Also, what I've noticed from pictures is that I've seen is that other brands extend slightly farther (the whole width of the truck) whereas the Toyota one ends the hood/fender line...

Loaded up with almost all Toyota had to offer, plus a few things they didn't offer...
I just installed an AVS on mine, had to remove the grill but was an easy install, Advance Auto Parts had them until the last day of 2007 for $37.91.
I just drove in the snow today and didn't have to use the wipers until I slowed down.
You may not notice them rubbing the paint now, but if you leave them on for a few years and decide to take it off, I'll guarantee that the paint will be damaged. I'll never get another one.
My 2 Cents: I bought the Lund Bug Shield and returned it for a couple of reasons. It came scratched because they use a huge box to ship the part in with no stabalization of the part in the box. Removing the grill is pretty easy but scary; the problem I had was the fit in trying to put the grill back on with the bug shield in place. The fit was so bad that the grill was shaving off the plastic on the bug shield and I couldn't get the grill back on with the bug shield in place. The other real problem I had, was the little plastic "cheap" fasteners used to hold the guard to the hood. I had to reorder them because the ones that came with it stripped and the second set stripped as well when putting pressure on the bug guard to reapply the grill. Overall I was not impressed with it at all except that it really does look good on trucks that were able to get it installed. Lund customer service was great and JC Whitney took it back no questions asked. Just passing along my experience.
Well I just installed the AVS Bug Shield. I saw the deal that Advance had it for $37.41, so I checked online. Sure enough. I couldn't figure out how to buy it for pickup (it kept wanting to ship it to me). So I went to the store today, they said it would be $54 w/ tax. I told them it was $37.41 online, the guy asked me for a printout of it. So I ran back home (fortunately it's only 2 miles to the advance from the house), printed it and went back.
The two hardest parts of the install were putting the grill and that stupid black thing back on. But it only took me about 30 mins to do all totoal. But damn it was cold in the driveway doing it.
