I think I would go with the 30 gal. in bed tank because I could take from truck to truck. My big thing it has to work with my 5er hitch. I hope we can get the tanks before Feb. our big trip south.
Gee, now I wonder if we could get someone to make a skid plate for the tank, as well as other parts of the truck.
That is something to think about because the bigger tank will be quite a bit lower (closer to the ground). In my Dmax I could actually see the bottom of the tank when I approached the truck from the side in a parking lot. I would guess it was 3-4" below where the actual body of the truck stops. There were still other parts (differentials, rear end etc) that were lower but it is something to consider.

I agree. I know differentials can be damaged, but I worry less about one of them than I do about dropping a big bunch of gasoline on the trail, or my engine oil for that matter.

Here is the response I got from them. Now we just have to wait for a price...
Hello SSgt Barker,
Yes we are currently conducting testing on a 2008 Toyota Tundra. We have developed a 49 gallon midship fuel tank to replace the OEM tank. We hope to begin production and have replacement systems available in the next month or two.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

I'd like to know if it will hang down any. Also if someone has dual exhaust will that effect this new larger tank any? I have no issues with a larger tank. I mean it is either fill up less often or more often but in the long run spending the same amount of money.

Naked, no one will ever know what just passed them up. Heck they probably don't even know the color.
In my case the further away from New York state I get the better the gas price, I have our state tax on gas and our area was just called the highest gas price in the nation. Does this tank come ready to put in ,do I have to use my own sending unit or buy any extras. I want to buy whatever comes out frist.
I wonder if the replacement tank they are developing for production will be for all models or just the longer bed models. I assume the frames are all the same just the body perched atop is different. I would not mind getting a larger replacement tank....again, as others stated, as long as it didnt hang down too far.

jusdging by some the less intelligent comments i hear co workers saying about gas prices and fill up costs, maybe toyota did this on purpose to appeal to those types of people. u know, the ones that have no idea what a mile per gallon is or what range would be only "how much does it cost to fill up". i was talkin about the amount of money i spend on my gas and a co worker said "how much does it cost to fill up? oh really? my truck is way worse, i feel up for 100 bucks". um yeah. has nothing to do with gas mileage u moron hahaha. but yes, those of us looking at the big picture would like a larger tank.
