I would love a 49 gallon fuel tank. Talk about a bladder busting 800 mile range between fill ups. I can just imagine teilling my wife that she'll have to wait until we stop for gas. On another thought it would be easier (on the ears and seat) to just stop and let her go and then drive off

You would win that contest with a 49 gallon tank. $3.89 a gallon x 49 gallons=$190.61

When your traveling 1,ooo to1,500 miles a pit stop is about 5 min . A pit stop with gas is about 20 mins. The less gas stops the better. I hope we get this tank soon. I really don't want to go with a generic in bed but will.

You can count me in for a 48 gallon replacement for the under body OEM 20 gallon tank! That would be the bomb, this freakin fuel tank has annoyed me since day 1. I am not hip on the in bed mounted ones as they take up bed space.

Did this tank come out yet? This is one thing that has held me back fr buying a CrewMax. I don't know what Toyota was thinking on this one. Maybe they don't quite understand trucks, yet.

We do a lot of long-haul towing with our travel trailer and we run up against the same problems as cwit. A 48 gallon tank would be great. You need all the size you can get when you're getting 10 US MPG!

It is clear to me that Toyota did this so that they could keep the GVWR below 7200 lbs. Otherwise they payload suffers because the payload is the GVWR less the weight of the fuel and driver only. They don't need to put in heavier springs (although you can, or better yet air bags) and they sell the truck with P tires (which you can also upgrade).
All research I have done supports this, and the trouble you'll get into is not if your actual truck weight exceeds the door sticker, only if it exceeds the load rating for your tires and your plates (registration). Also, as this is NOT registered as a commercial vehicle you're not going to attract the LEOs UNLESS you are driving like an idiot or have no tow mirrors or are over length (eg trailer with a boat behind over 65 feet). I guess I digressed from the original thread there a bit.

Here is a reply to my Email regarding the tank development:

(We are in the testing phases of development. Toyota provides a very small evaporative fuel system making it very difficult to add gasoline capacity to the truck. We are working on getting that system to pass as we speak.
I will keep your contact information to follow up with you once our testing is complete.)

1 gallon of gasoline equals 5.8 to 6.5 lbs. depending on temperature.

Good point, we're only talking about 60 lbs for 10 extra gallons! Well, plus the weight of the bigger tank. Why they didn't put in a 36 gallon tank really doesn't make sense.

After having the truck for 1 week only, the gas tank is tiny!!! Although the tank is small, there are upsides to it.

1. You see the fuel gauge move more often so you are more conscious about driving smarter for MPG.
2. You're SUPPOSED to check your oil, other fluids, tires, etc. every time you fill up as good practice so this helps you monitor your truck frequently.
3. Having a smaller tank does keep the truck that much lighter which I guess helps MPG that much more.

But in the end, I wish the tank was at least 10 gallons larger! HAHA. I don't know why I just advertised that the gas tank being small was a good thing. I hope there is a simple solution for holding more fuel in the future for us.

I received another upd8 regarding the tank development and we might get a good groop buy as a promo for the tank once its ready. I will keep u guys posted. it would be helpfull if few other members send interest emails to them as well more the better. here is the latest email:

Thank you very much for the information. I have been in Detroit this week working with the main fuel system engineer on our progress and asking for help. We have some extremely difficult hurdles to cross in order to pass the next steps but you can bank we are working hard on this project.

I have sent your email to our Marketing Manager and asked that he look into providing an update on our progress.

Here is a email link from a sales manager I have been talking with.
