I did this mod today. Thanks to 006 and his written tutorial I was able to get through it. It took me 4 hours to complete. The video link is dead so if anyone has the video saved to thier computer still it may help to repost the video. I used krylon, fusion gloss black 5 coats waiting 10-12 mins between coats. ace hardware carries but home depot only carries rustoleum.

just a few minor suggestions:

1) you don't have to tape up the lens to the turn signal that is clipped into the chrome housing prior to painting, you can simply remove it.

2) also when reinstalling the bulbs, the high beam light has a seal around where it is supposed to be inserted and turned into place. well if that seal is not removed it is impossible to reinsert the bulb into place. if you force it aluminum dust particles will break free of the housing of the bulb and if you have already placed the lens back in place the inside of the lens will have metal particles all over and it will look nasty. this can prbally be avoided all together if you insert your bulbs first and then put the lens back. hind-sight is always 20/20

3) buy 2 cans of paint

4) you may need to hang the housings with string so that you can reach all around the housing with your spray can.

well thanks a million to 006.

I love the way it looks.

Did mine this past weekend, and it looks great. My only concern is the headlamps being sealed properly. Rain is in the forecast later this week, so I'll find out then if it's a total success.

has anyone removed the orange reflector completely, or fabricated their own clear diffuser to use in its place?

this is done commonly on headlight mods of other car makes to achieve a "clear corners" look

Took the day off work while wifey was gone (so she didn't see me working on the truck again; already in enough trouble!). I think I was in too much of a hurry to get it back on before wifey got home and didn't let one of the lights cool down long enough because I got condensation in it. I put the lights in, sealing everything while it was still warm and I think the vapors from the adhesive caused it.

Waited until wife got in the shower and pulled it off again, threw it back in the oven for a little bit and let it sit over night in the garage. Seemed to work out so far...if I see anymore, I'm thinkin' that I'll blast dry air or nitrogen in there.

Other than that, friggin' awesome man! Thanks for the video!

I thought someone mentioned not being able to do this to the rear tail lights. Is that true? I tried for three days to read all 14 pages of threads. Is it possible to do this to the rear tails?

Angry Re: DIY: Black Headlight Mod with Video Tutorial

WTF So today I decided to try this mod after reading about it for a week.. I start by breaking all four plastic clips that hold in the trim peice but I figure ah what the hell. they are probably cheap no big deal. So then I procede to pulling out the trim peice as stated in 006's exact words

"Move to the other side of the trim and use a little bit of elbow grease to pull the trim from the body where it meets the body, pulling STRAIGHT FORWARD and the piece should come out after a few wiggles. You won't break it, I promise."

Not only does it break but the botom nipple breaks completley off inside the truck and the top one breaks of at the tip and the freaking trim peice completley cracks. Ok so I take a deep breath and figure what the hell, it's only F*ing money right? I started to try and take the other side off when it decides to start to crack.

So I said f* this and attempted to put everything back together but really can't since all four clips are broke and so is the left trim peice.

Thanks a bunch for the helpful video. It makes it look real easy!

Anyone know how much trim peices are?

Is the amber reflector on the sides removable? If so does anyone have a picture of what it looks like behind?
