TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "DIY: Black Headlight Mod with Video Tutorial", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
No offense, but spending $200 for a set is just silly when you can do it yourself for about $10 and +/- 6 hours of free time. Sorry, not trying to start anything, but that just strikes me as odd. $10+6 hours of something entertaining and you have the pride of doing it yourself vs. $200 and wonder if the person did it to your liking. Don't be scared of the mod...I'm lazy and I have not only done it to my F-150, but my Tundra, and now robsatx's Tundra. It's really no big deal...
And also, the Tundra light housings have a "vent" in them, if you take a gander at the back of your light you will see it, specifically to prevent moisture buildup inside the headlights. I'm sure if moisture can vent through that, then so can the fumes. I've never heard of that problem, and I've also been involved with paint and automotive, as a hobby and as employment. Maybe if you used some really bad paint...or covered the vent for some reason, then that problem might develop...but for one good can paint that's going to last on someone's headlight, we're talking $3-6...why wold they buy the cheap stuff anyway? And that's just assuming that the thread you are referring to was caused by bad/cheap paint in the first place. I highly doubt that it will cause any damage.
First of all, on offense taken. Everyone on here has an ego and likes to talk big because they will never have to face the person that they rip on. This is why I don't post alot.
Anyway, I don't think $200 is that much and I am probably mistaken on the price. 985motoring or something like that is selling them from CG Lighting. If you have been involved in paint then you should know what I am talking about. I did not say that it would damage the lens, I meant it could cause a film to build up on the lens. Good to know that the lens's have vents, did not know that. I did find a thread that someone mentioned that heating the lights has caused them to fog/haze up. So I was wrong, it wasn't the paint. Anyway, everyones lights look awesome and I am either going to buy them when they are available or try it myself. Time is a major issue.

I'm not going to get in a pointless online argument. But I will say that I don't have an ego about anything and I wouldn't say anything on here that I wouldn't say in person. I believe my reply to robsatx's post about 2WD trucks having a lift was pretty blunt and could be taken as a little bit of attitude...yet I met him just yesterday to perform the mod on his lights. So you're right...I wouldn't be saying that stuff if I didn't have to meet the person. I'm just a big bad internet badass. Lol. That may be true of some people, but definitely not me.
As far as the lenses getting fogging/hazing from baking them, it's probably because they were in for too long or something. I'm not an expert on the mod, but I have performed it a few times now and have yet to have a single complication. All I was saying that if you can just do the mod yourself for less than $10 why spend any more than that? They would have to be $10 or less for it to make sense to me. Otherwise it seems like a waste of money that could be spent on other things. That's all I'm saying. You do what you want with your money and your mods, I'll just spend less on mine

006, that's awesome and thanks for taking the time to do this for all of us. I have a white 02 Tundra and have been thinking about doing this mod to my truck, does anyone have any photos of an old body style Tundra with this mod done to it?
This really looks cool. Great write up and video 006. I also have an 02 but the headlights are different. It looks like this could still be done by taping off the prizm area behind the headlight bulb which would retain the refective area for the light to shine forward similar to the round reflectors the 07 and 08 have behind their bulbs. 006 would you agree with me on this? I would definitely like to do this to mine. What do you guys like better---the flat black or gloss black? Thanks for any input
