TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "DIY: Black Headlight Mod with Video Tutorial", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Don't feel bad Babeo71... I found a tiny spot on my drivers side that flaked.. Must have bumped it when I was putting it back in side the headlight.. I'ts not incredibly noticeable and one day I'll bust it back open and touch it up..
Have you guys seen a Nautical Blue with the Headlight MOD yet??? I'd really like to see some pics of it!

Im in the middle of doing the headlight mod, i have two questions, My truck is slate with the sport grill and limited painted bumper what shade of black should i use gloss, or flat? second question has anybody taped of a smaller amount of the marker lamp cutout to make it smaller, any thoughts?
Update: Mine decided to Leak!. I thought I had them sealed really well but I guess not.. Even washing the truck never caused any fogging but we had some good rain lately and I drove home from work in a nice down pour and now they're fogging up.. the drivers side worse than the passenger.. I need to open that one up anyway because I see a little nick inside.. The passenger side I"ll just reheat and try to squeeze around the parameter and hopes that I shift some of the sealant around to close up any small leaks..

I would go with a satin finish: specifically, Krylon Fusion [Walmart}
I taped off all but a circle on the TS lens.

Successfully got my Drivers side fixed. Even touched up a little spot that must have gotten nicked when I did them the first time.
I basically just heated it up and pulled it apart.. This time I took it a step further.. I practically removed every bit of the Factory RTV that I could.. I took a screw driver and just kept reheating the Lens parts and scooping out chunks of it. Then I ran down to the local Autoparts and found something new that I've never seen before.. It was RTV but instead of being in a squeeze tube it was in a can like Hair Mousse.. You just Bend the Dispensing Stem over and it comes out rather nicely. Allows you to precisely control where and how much RTV comes out.. So, I basically filled that little channel on the back of the lens with RTV and brought the two pieces together nice and firm and so far so good no more leaks and my little nick is repaired... I guess the next big rain storm will tell.
As far as my passenger Lens.. It was fogging up before so I reheated it but didn't pull it apart.. Instead I went around the entire area where the lens sits inside the RTV Channel and squeezed it a bit with a pair of pliers.. Hoping to fill or squish around the RTV in there to close any slight leaks..
So for you guys starting yours.. Just make sure you seal them really well.

Oh BTW - I took my truck in for it's very first Service yesterday.. I had a buddy standing over by my truck while I was inside with the Service Rep.. My buddy was just waiting on me to give me a ride..
When I came out he said one of the people that works at the dealership came walking up saying something like.. "Ahh Cool, These look much better with the black headlights now"..
Almost like he was under the impression Toyota was doing it.. LOL.
anyone done this in the denver area? i dont want to try it myself but would be willing to fill someone fridge with beer for giving me a hand with it. pm me

I just did mine yesterday. They look so much better this way. With my luck they'll fog up, so I ended up sealing them up a little more.
I used a flavor injector that has a long, fine tip on it and filled it up with some clear drying sealant. I used that and filled all the gaps around the edge of the lights... just in case. I didn't want to take them apart again. It was probably over kill.
just a note guys, im in the process of doing this right now. i noticed the white circle cap things (there's three of them per light) are the covers for the vents. its probably a good idea to remove these BEFORE baking them, as they are thin plastic and can warp in the oven. will post pics when all done.
Phew...just installed my newly modded black headlights. Looks much meaner! Thanks 006 for the written instructions and video! I don't think I'd even attempt this without it. Crossing my fingers that it doesn't fog up. Will I need to wait until its winter to see if it fogs up?
Also another note: when putting the lens back onto the newly painted housing, watch out for the corner (near the reflector). Paint comes off pretty easily there when you try to fit the lens back on.
